lowboy 1 #1 Posted March 10, 2014 i am restoring a 1989 414-8 for my father. i bought it in pieces and am reassembling for paint. what is the plunger looking thing that the idler pulley that the clutch pedal moves comes back and hits? it appears to push on it when the clutch pedal is released (all the way up), and thus the pulley moves up and towards the back of the tractor tightening the belt so the tractor moves. i see no purpose for it, no wires to it. i also dont see it in the toro parts viewer

gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,524 #3 Posted March 10, 2014 It may be an air shock to dampen the clutch engagement. There was a couple of changes to that system and the last was a gas shock. They prevent the clutch from being released too fast. It is item #53 on the Brake, Clutch and Speed control page at the Toro MPV. Garry
daveoman1966 3,841 #4 Posted March 10, 2014 Right...it is a dampener. Keeps you from popping wheelies (and tearing up stuff) when releasing the clutch.
Foozerush 40 #5 Posted March 10, 2014 That gas shock thingy does wear out, and your clutch petal will not work properly. On my 416-8, I put a spring ( I forget the part #, but I'm sure someone knows it off bat...) on the linkage on the petal side to the tranny axel, on mine has an ear with a hole for the other end of the spring to attach. If I remember that gas shock was 75+, the spring was less than 20 with shipping. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

lowboy 1 #9 Posted March 11, 2014 lots of people use the spring instead of the shock, its only 7 or 8 dollars from the dealer, part number is 108035 what would be the advantage to this; or purley cost of the replacement part? Since you were having starting troubles I assumed you just missed the wires, Sorry i thought it was a switch at first too, could not figure out how a wire would hook to it. i also then noticed the plastic switch between the clutch pulley and the frame
Kelly 1,033 #10 Posted March 11, 2014 The gas shock was to make the clutch engagement smooth, no way to dump the clutch and pop a wheelie, even if your foot slipped off the pedal it would still be smooth.
Bud Rig 0 #11 Posted April 3, 2020 Any pictures of the gas shock for clutch in place on the tractor, my 314-8 has a spring on the left side which is easy to see, but when I pulled the right rear wheel to remove the shock I didn't see it? It's a 2000 314-8, sn 200000422. And when I find the shock and when I remove it do I need to install a spring in it's place or the spring on the other side is adequate? Thanks in advance for your help.
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,524 #12 Posted April 4, 2020 The spring on the left side should be all it needs unless it is getting weak. The dampener on the right is behind the drive belt guard. The arm the idler pulley is on also secures one end of the dampener. Garry
