Crown Vic P71 20 #1 Posted February 24, 2014 I was wondering how this hub is supposed to hook onto the driveshaft, also curious if these are the right bolts. Thanks for a reply and the pictures are to follow. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Forgot to add I'm not sure if it bolts onto the bushings protruding for the rubber spacer or those flush with it Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 10,641 #2 Posted February 24, 2014 The illustrated parts lists at Toro show how the bushings are arranged. What is you model number and serial number so we can all look at the same pages? Garry
shorts 182 #3 Posted February 24, 2014 According to your signature, you're the specialist, But if it was me I'd look at the wear pattern on the rag joint, you will find that the shaft couplers are at 90* to each other and that they bolt up to the longer side of the rag joint lugs to allow for maximum movement. Loosen the set screws on the shaft flanges until the pump and engine are lined up and tightened down, then center the coupler so that their is minimum flex in the coupler and then tighten down the set screws. Make sure that the keys are fully engaged with the couplers.
Crown Vic P71 20 #4 Posted February 24, 2014 I like to think I myself as a "specialist" lol someday I just may be one... Thanks for the reply! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 10,641 #5 Posted February 25, 2014 I wonder if these need to be timed like universal joints on a drive shaft? I'm thinking they need to be. A drive shaft travels forward and backward on each rotation. Joints not timed correctly restrict this movement and put pressure on the shafts beyong each joint. In this case the engine and the pump. Opinions? Garry
Jim_M 178 #6 Posted February 25, 2014 The flex joint or rag joint takes care of that movement.
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 10,641 #7 Posted February 26, 2014 Here is the 5xi service manual The drive shaft is covered on the last pages of part 1. Garry
shorts 182 #8 Posted February 27, 2014 Sorry for my smart a** remark about being a specialist, sometimes I forget that their was a time that I didn't know my name much less how to spell it. shorts
RMCIII 838 #9 Posted March 5, 2014 Something is not looking correct in that picture. Just my , not worth much, but something is not right. I will look at mine today and take a photo. Rob
Brrly1 1,146 #10 Posted March 5, 2014 Shorts ol' buddy, Brennen is only sixteen and is just learning. He does a pretty good job and isn't afraid to get hands dirty. He's a good sized kid and might possibly look you in the eye as he is already staring me down. To bad Toro doesn't have any internship as I think he would do great. Brennen keep on wrenching you've got a ways to go before you catch Carl but my money's on you.
Crown Vic P71 20 #11 Posted March 7, 2014 Hey thanks everyone for the replies and than you guest for the link to that manual! Also I don't want to get too mushy brrly but thanks for the comment it really does mean a lot to me that you got your money on me to be like Carl someday! I hope I can be, but I don't know if any one could possibly ever beat him lol Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
shorts 182 #12 Posted March 7, 2014 Brrly1 I apologized for busting on Brennen and his signature in his original post, I then went on to give him solid advise as to how to solve his problem without looking for or at manual that may or may not have been available. Their are many things that are needed to become a good technician one of the most important skills is developing the ability to look at the parts and having them tell you what they want or need to be happy doing whatever they are supposed to do. Hopefully all of our young and not so young members will continue to work on improving our skills and learn how to troubleshoot, test, diagnose and repair these tractors properly and not just throw parts at them until the problem is solved. I'm sure that it would be a Pleasure to meet Brennan and encourage him to continue working on these tractors. Shorts
