boondockboost 34 #1 Posted February 19, 2014 hey everyone i had a few questions. my 72 raider 12 isnt charging.it has a k301s kohler in it. im not to good at electronics but i have to learn sometime. so i have a good battery to start. now the current rectifier on there looks like the board has a crack in it. im not positive if this could be the issue but im going to replace that. would something like this work? i see it is the same setup as mine. i tryed doing a little searching on here and people said you can get them from ebay but the part number i have isnt listed on any of the ebay pages. also is if i wanted to test the stator how should i go about doing so? i assume starting up the engine and using a multimeter on the wires coming from the stator? i have check my gorunds and inspected all the wires they all seem good. i would really apperciate the help. im new to the wheel horses. my neighbor had them when i was groing up as a kid and always was intrested and now i finally have one. thanks nick.
boondockboost 34 #2 Posted February 19, 2014 pretty much not positive how to test the r/r or how to test the stator. not really good at electrical issues. and dont know much about using a multimeter.
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,393 #3 Posted February 20, 2014 First thing to check is the battery voltage across the posts with the engine not running. Now turn the key to ON or RUN with the engine not running. You should have the same DC voltage reading at the +12 volt regulator terminal. What this does is check that the charging current has a path to the battery if everything is working correctly. To test the stator remove the connector from the regulator and put the tester leads into the 2 stator wire terminals. Switch the multimeter to AC volts and at least 50 volts if it has that option. Run the engine at 3/4 speed and see what the voltage is. This manual has the best description of this test procedure. http://www.wheelhorseforum.com/files/file/674-engine-kohler-k-series-sm-tp-2379pdf/ If everything tests ok try adding a ground wire from one of the regulator mounting bolts back to a good battery ground. It must be grounded to work properly. Let us know what you find. Garry
boondockboost 34 #4 Posted February 20, 2014 I highly appreciate the help but just out of curiosity does it matter witch +12 volt regulator terminal you put the test probe on? I know there's 3, one for the ground to the ignition switch and then 2 next to each other. But not sure if there both + or one is neg and one is pos.
rmaynard 16,204 #5 Posted February 20, 2014 (edited) Two are marked AC. They are where the stator is connected. The other is your B+ or 12 volts. All the terminals are marked as shown in the picture. Edited February 20, 2014 by rmaynard
boondockboost 34 #6 Posted February 24, 2014 So what have so far. New battery tested 12.62v at the battery post and 11.30v at the b+ terminal on the r/r
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,393 #7 Posted February 24, 2014 That is using the same ground for both readings? If so you have a bad connection somewhere between the regulator and the battery. It could be more than one. First remove the negative cable from the battery and isolate it. Then take each connection apart and clean it up with fine sandpaper. It could also be inside the ignition switch but do the others first. Just follow the wiring diagram. If you used different ground locations to measure it could be bad grounds in the chassis metal. boondockboost 34 #8 Posted February 25, 2014 Yeah I used the neg terminal as a ground point. Ill have to go threw the wires and see what happens
Fonz 0 #9 Posted March 17, 2014 My 417a wheel horse is not charging could it be the rectifier and where is it located ?
KATO 115 #10 Posted March 17, 2014 (edited) FONZ Heres a link to the owners manual which may help you and you will likely get more help if you start a new thread seperate from this one Edited March 17, 2014 by KATO
