SethL1984 38 #1 Posted February 16, 2014 Gents, what is the life span on a K301 vertical muffler? (85' 312-8) - Is there a media that can deteriorate? Or not? Thanks in advance.
Wishin4a416 2,192 #2 Posted February 16, 2014 (edited) I think a lot depends on whether stored indoors or out. My 87 312 muffler is still in great shape with very little rust showing. I have seen newer machines stored out and the muffler and the tractor where in rough shape. if it is still solid but rusty, it can be taken off and cleaned up and repainted. TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #3 Posted February 16, 2014 There is no packing, but the perforated inner pipe (baffle) can burn out or break apart. Worst case being a blockage of the outlet causing performance issues. Remove the muffler and shake it. If it rattles, it needs attention. I have cut them open and repaired the baffles, etc., but only on mufflers that still had a solid body. I have also built my own mufflers from various diameters of automotive exhaust pipe / metal discs for the end caps.
