This is why we buy snow throwers and hang on to them for years and years and years - because someday there's going to come a snow and why miss it if you don't have to!!!! Ken B 3,189 #8 Posted February 13, 2014 I was watching the news last night and they were showing clips of the traffic on a highway in North Carolina. Yeah, it wasn't pretty! During the News they showed the Gov. of North Carolina telling people not to put on their stupid hats for the day and to stay off the roads. By the looks of what I saw on that highway not too many people listened! My brother lives in Statesville North Carolina, he tells me that when it does snow it gets pretty ugly on the roads because most people have very little experience with snow, not too mention the shortage of plow trucks and sanders.. shorts 182 #9 Posted February 13, 2014 (edited) The snow is no problem, It's the Ice and the relatively warm temps that make it miserable, IMHO their isn't anything worse than driving on warm wet ice, once the temps drop to single digits or below the ice has whole lot more traction or grip. Iggy68 28 #10 Posted February 14, 2014 Ken I'm about an 1 1/2 hours south of Statesville. The roads were a mess this morning. Wet snow under crusted top from the freezing rain. With the lack of snow removal equipment they clear the major highways and roads first. That took most of today. The side roads will not get done until tomorrow. I couldn't believe how hard it was to maneuver around this morning. I have lived in Michigan and Colorado and this snow was the worst I have ever driven in. It felt like there was 18" on the ground. Good news it will all be gone by Monday. People that have lived in snowy climates don't usually understand why midwestern/southern areas shutdown with such comparatively little snow. Don1977 605 #12 Posted February 14, 2014 One of the problems with driving on snow is there are a lot of drivers here that have never driven on it. As the last large snows here were 25 years ago. The snow here is usually wet packs into instance wheel stops. Where I live we got 5" of dry snow Wednesday. Wednesday night got inch and half of sleet with rain on top and another 5" of wet snow on top today. I drove my Explorer out the driveway it would get on top of the ice layer then break through.
