Crown Vic P71 20 #1 Posted February 11, 2014 Will a starter on a 10 hp Kohler work on my 1968 charger 12s k301 12 hp motor? Any response is appreciated! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
SousaKerry 503 #2 Posted February 11, 2014 Should fit just fine. As far as I know (and if I am wrong I will get corrected) the only starters for single cylinders that are not interchangeable are 16hp because they have a lower gear ratio for more torque. To be absolutely sure count the number of teeth on each if they are the same your good to go. 10HP and 12HP blocks are nearly identical, they use a different crank and may have a different fin count. Crown Vic P71 20 #3 Posted February 11, 2014 Okay thanks for the info! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
stevasaurus 23,314 #4 Posted February 11, 2014 The high mount starter fits the 10, 12 and I think the 14 hsp Kohler. There are 2 different counts on the starter teeth...both should work just fine.
leeave96 490 #5 Posted February 11, 2014 Just asking 'cause I don't know, but would these engines have a bendix type starter or a starter/generator?
stevasaurus 23,314 #6 Posted February 11, 2014 It is just a starter...called a high mount because the mount is below the starter...
Crown Vic P71 20 #7 Posted February 11, 2014 Thanks for the Info steveasaurus! And didn't they make the charger 12s with starter generators as well? I thought I saw videos as well Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
520HC 208 #8 Posted February 11, 2014 They made a few Chargers with starter/gens. Don't know the number, but not many.

Kelly 1,033 #10 Posted February 12, 2014 Early 68 had starter/gen the latter ones are gear drive starters. and yes all big block high mount starters will interchange, even if a different tooth count.
