Was wondering what the life expectancy of the k341 would be hr. Wise if maintained.

Looking at some point at a 1986 416-8 with 897hrs. Owner says it does not smoke and runs well. Anything I should pay

Close attention to when I look at it?

Listen to it run at all speeds. Pay particular attention to any knocks or rattles that just don't sound like they should be there. But regardless, if the history shows that it has not been rebuilt before, the K341 has a lot of rebuilt capability. The cylinder can be bored to .030 oversize, and the crankshaft can be turned to .010 undersize. Still lots of Kohler brand and after-market parts available for it.

I appreciate the info. Not knowing the maintenance history is always scary. I know these machines are tanks and did a working resto on one this spring not knowing the hrs. Or how it we scared for and it turned out to be a beast.

My main rule is knocks and smoke, then I give it a pass.  Rebuilding is OK - if you are willing to stomach the $$$'s involved.  I wouldn't hesitate to rebuild my "lifetime" members of my tractor fleet, but if a motor is otherwise bad - the tractor goes the parts or for-sale side of the basement.

If it was taken care of you should be ok. Its really amazed me over the years how long these engines can go before needing to be rebuilt.
