753 wiring.

Recommended Posts

zanepetty

I'm trying to wire up my 753 tractor. I thought it was right but when I touched the cables to the battery there was a lot of smoke and the wires to the ammeter were fried. Also the resistor smokes a little when the key is turned on. I have the manual but I can't make heads or tales of that diagram. I don't see the solenoid or resistor or any of that on there. Also my wires were all one color. Any help is greatly appreciated.

The 753 did not originally have a solenoid or resistor. Is the resistor powering the ignition coil?

Yes it is I think. It has a wire directly from resistor to coil.

The original Kohler coil had an internal resistor so it has been replaced with an automotive coil and external resistor. Nothing wrong with that.

You have black red white and green wires. Why not get some electrical tape with the matching colors and apply a band of it at each end of the wires as you trace them?

The black wire on the starter button supplies the starter when pushed. That wire goes to a small terminal on the solenoid. If there is a 2nd small terminal it may need to be ground to make the solenoid work. Try it without first as it may have an internal ground through the mounting bolts. The large solenoid bolts/terminals connect to the + battery and to the starter terminal that the black wire in the diagram is connected to.

The addition of a solenoid is a good idea as it reduces the electrical load on the wiring and switches.

Wheel Horse did use a solenoid on a Briggs and Stratton engine with a starter/generator but have forgotten the tractor model so can't look for that diagram.

All my wires are red and PO took away srarter button no I have a three way key switch. I bought a coil from tsc. Do I still have to run the resistor?

If you got a coil that replaces the 231281 or 47-145-01 Kohler coil you do not need the resistor because these have an internal resistor. What does the coil you got replace?

No. Numbers don't match.. I just tried it and it wouldn't turn over. It started to get warm so I unhooked it. Should I get the Kohler coil or go with the one I have with resistor? Also would this cause my tractor not to even turn over with me not having a resistor?

The resistor has nothing to do with the starter circuit - spark only.

The solenoid is necessary with the ignition switch you have.

The coil and resistor you have should work.

Found the B&S with the starter generator and starter solenoid -  1974 A-90 Special. Here is the diagram.

This model uses a different ignition switch because the B&S has magneto ignition but the rest should be the same.

Well I didn't wire in the resistor. But I don't know why its not even turning over. My solenoid has 3 posts. I have the center post on my key switch run to the smallest post on solenoid. One post on my solenoid has a battery cable that goes to the battery, and the other has a cable that goes to the voltage regulator and starter/generator.

Zane... the 3 post solenoid grounds itself thru the metal mounting bracket. With ALL that nice new paint on your tractor,   :teasing-poke:  it may not be grounding :dunno:

I ground the paint off where it mounts.. it mounts on the same bolts that hold the deck height adjustment piece on. I just don't know what to do. I'm so close yet so far away.

When you turn the key to start is the solenoid closing and passing battery voltage from the battery cable to the cable going to the starter?

Here is the only Kohler manual I've seen that covers this starter/generator system.

Thanks for that diagram Garry. I have it wired just like that. When I turn the key it only makes a clicking noise. The solenoid clicks but the motor doesn't turn over.

Do you have a test light or voltmeter to see what is in the solenoid to starter wire when cranking?

No voltage the solenoid is bad.

If there is voltage there is a problem with the starter.

Well I have voltage in that wire when I turn the key over so I guess its my starter?

Take the starter off. Open it up and look at the brushes. It may be as simple as replacing them. Follow the Kohler manual and let us know what you find.

I took it to a starter generator shop and they checked it and said it was working great. So that's not the problem. What the heck?! Am I just this mechanically challenged?!

OK Zane1st off... stay positive :handgestures-thumbupright:   Your close to getting this puppy,  I mean :wh:  running :icecream:

So you had the S/G benched tested @ a shop-- good  :handgestures-thumbupright:   Probably would be a good thing to replace the brushes, but that's your call

Well I have voltage in that wire when I turn the key over so I guess its my starter?

Next you said you had voltage in the wire... which wire?  the small wire to the solenoid ? or the Batt cable from the solenoid to the S/G  ?

How did you test this... with a test light or multimeter ?  why I ask is... a test light may light , but you might not have a GOOD 12+ volts to the S/G, that's why its best to check with a multimeter ... :handgestures-thumbupright:

If you have it bolted back on post some good pics of the cables & wiring at the solenoid , S/G & voltage reg.  so we are seeing what your seeing

I took it to a starter generator shop and they checked it and said it was working great. So that's not the problem. What the heck?! Am I just this mechanically challenged?!

As far as being mechanically challenged... won't touch dat ...  :scratchead:   :teasing-poke:

All is good... we're here to help  :occasion-snowman:

Thanks pal. You guys will never believe this. I bolted my starter back up when I got back from the repair shop and..everything works like a charm. Why didn't it work before? I have no idea blows my mind honestly. I have no explanation for it.

You had a bad connection somewhere and when you re-installed the connectin was  made good. The way you say it was smoking,it seems like a ground to me

But it is old enough to smoke.

Sorry I had to say that,I'm tired it's been a long day. :text-imsorry:
