Front spindle size on D type machines

Recommended Posts

I recently acquired a '73 18-auto with ARK 550 loader.  I was considering upgrading the front end with tapered roller hubs, 4 or 5 bolt rims, and 1" spindles as I've seen in some of the posts.  I like the spindles from I believe a 520 that have the castellated nuts as setting the preload will be easier.

Long story short, when I took my wheels apart, I found 1" spindles.  My model in the parts lookup calls out 3/4" spindles, bearings, etc.  So what do I have?   Were they an option or did someone in the last 40 years upgrade them?  There is some play in the wheel along the spindle axis which probably is because there are no shim washers.  Just the bolt and flat washer keeping the wheel from sliding off, which is why I thought someone may have swapped parts.

Thanks in advance,

Carl

Likely the spindles were upgraded. I redid my D200 front end with tapered bearings and new wheels. is the thread on it.

Hi Marvin,

Thanks for the link to your upgrade.  I had seen it before but this time went through it carefully since I now know I have 1" spindles.  I think it is the simplest way to make the change for any machine that has the 1" hardware.

I assume you used the sleeve bearing to make up for not having the shaft end threaded for a castellated nut.  My shaft is 4 1/4" long and the hub claims it is for a 4" shaft, so a spacer/collar and some shim washers should get things snug.

Thanks again

Carl

M D200 has the 1" spindles, I guess it was a factory option at some point.  It is not something done by a previous owner.
