Forestry4Life 9 #1 Posted January 27, 2014 I have a 58' RJ that I bought for my son to carry to antique tractor pulls to ride around on. When I bought it the head gasket was leaking. That being fixed along with the carb being rebuilt and doing a general tune up, it ran fine for about 2 months. It started getting harder and harder to crank. I changed the points over to the little ignition box and again ran fine for a couple of months. It was firing but not a strong spark. Changed the coil(twice) the magnets got loose and assumed it burnt the first one. Have even replace the ignition again thinking that was it. Still will not crank. I have worn out a drill and the recoil starter trying to get going again. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated! I have a 5 yo that is getting ready to break ground as soon as weather permits( it also has the turning plow). Thanks in advance
AMC RULES 37,210 #2 Posted January 27, 2014 Could always swap out the engine for another... until you get that one figured out.
Forestry4Life 9 #3 Posted January 27, 2014 (edited) What are some of my options on a swap? The RJ is nicely restored and would like to stay as close to the "look" as I could. The reason I ask is that the ones I have looked at are reversed from what I have and there is very little clearance under the hood cowling. I could take the gas tank off the new motor but that doesn't help because the muffler and breather would have to be modified to fit. Just wondering what others have done if the had to repower? AMC RULES 37,210 #4 Posted January 27, 2014 I was thinking about picking up another K-90, K-91, or a little Clinton B-1290 in the meantime. Have you checked the classifieds section here on ? Maybe place a "wanted" ad for your engine needs there too.
Forestry4Life 9 #5 Posted January 27, 2014 I have searched around here for another K91 with no luck. I'll keep checking on here as well. Thanks for the help
AMC RULES 37,210 #6 Posted January 27, 2014 When you say it won't crank, you mean it's turning over but won't fire off. Weak spark? Wonder, you did change to a new plug too?
Forestry4Life 9 #7 Posted January 28, 2014 I have changed the plug twice. Have carried to a small engine shop with a ton a of experience and they are stumped. The only thing we can guess is that the magnets are getting weak or the air gap is messed up?
