mikemc53 10 #1 Posted January 25, 2014 Hopefully not as bad as the title makes it seem but here it is. Just finished plowing the last pass and the tractor started to sputter and die. First thought was, out of gas, since I had been running it for some time. Went to fill it and saw that I wasn't low at all but I added some anyway. Got back on and...nothing. No crank, no noise, nothing at all. Pushed it back to the barn and checked all my connections - nothing seems out of place. The battery is strong and has been cranking without any hesitation but I decided to jump it anyway...nothing. It seems that even with a jump from the Jeep, nothing is getting through. Can't figure this one out. Any and all help appreciated. Thanks gang.
rmaynard 16,232 #2 Posted January 25, 2014 (edited) Sounds like maybe a bad ground. I was plowing a few weeks ago and the same thing happened to me on my B-100. Turned out the nut and bolt that holds the ground wire to the battery terminal came loose. On the C-81, you could have a bad or loose ground wire from the engine cradle to the frame. When you jumped it, did you connect to the battery for your ground? If so, try connecting directly to the engine block. If it starts and runs, then dies when you take the jumper off, it's a bad ground. Edited January 25, 2014 by rmaynard
can whlvr 994 #3 Posted January 25, 2014 check your fuses too, could have gotten some water in there,do you have power to the ignition,i would directly jump to the starter to see if it runs, then work backwards if it does

smoreau 658 #5 Posted January 26, 2014 check the amp meter, If one of the connections go bad it will quit just like that, That happened to my dads c81 last year.
TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #6 Posted January 26, 2014 Ditto on the amp gauge. I know it sped up the assembly process, but those connections should have been ring terminals secured to the posts by nuts, not push-on connections.
mikemc53 10 #7 Posted January 26, 2014 I tried jumping it going right to the block as my ground and still, nothing. Not sure where the fuses are but I'll check them. The amp gauge I never thought of. Is it tough to get to the connectors? I'll see if I get a few minutes tomorrow to try and look into the amp gauge and the fuses.

Kelly 1,033 #9 Posted January 26, 2014 Amp meter, pull the panel the meter is bolted to, I've had more than one do this, and bad connection there kills power to everything.
mikemc53 10 #10 Posted January 31, 2014 You guys are absolutely awesome. Pulled the panel and there it was...one of the leads had come off the amp meter. Plugged it in - fired right up. I'll need to put some new connectors on this spring but, for now, it works for me. Got some snow coming tomorrow and now I'm ready. Thanks guys. You have never failed to get me through any issue!
