Sheared Hydro Fan Bolt

Recommended Posts

varosd

On the 1983 GT 1848, the hydro fan 1/4 bolt is sheared off flush with the pulley....

any ideas on how to fix or is she destined to be my Winter rig....  I would have figured that the nylon fan would have just had broken off fins. How they heck did this happen?

I assume that the pump isn't locked up?

I'd attack it with an EZ out.  Remove the fender and maybe the wheel so you can get in there nice and straight with the drill.  I usually drill the pilot hole with a left hand drill bit in the hope that the bolt will loosen itself as I drill it.  Do your best to get the hole centered.  Pray and swear a lot while you are doing it.

I had one in my 520 broke off I used it for two years that way with no problems, then last winter I was plowing and the trans temp light came on, so I figured it was time to fix it, and the broken bolt screwed out with a pick, I used it to catch a thread sticking out and the bolt came right out, I know I was lucky, but you never know try the left hand drill bit first.

Success!

I finally got around to getting the bolt out.  I  used a Irwin "Allen" #3 spiral extractor. The left hand drill bit didn't do the job but I center punched the center and used a 1/8 right bit to get things started.  increased bit size until I could get the spiral to bite with the tap wrench handle. threads are OK!

looks like there was also blue thread lock on the bolt?

:text-thankyoublue:
