56flatbed 29 #1 Posted January 16, 2014 Since I now have a running C145 I have had time to start tear down on my C141. It died a slow death on snow blower duty sometime before Christmas. Anyway, I have the engine almost completely torn down. Connecting rod is in 4 pieces and the crank is messed up some. Everything else seems to be just normal wear. Question is, what's the general opinion on reinstalling the balance gears vs leaving them out? By the way, Kelly if you're reading this, my C141 must have really had some hours on it. It never ran like the C145 does. That thing will damn near stand on it's tail if you aren't careful! Appreciate any thoughts. Wally
Kelly 1,033 #2 Posted January 16, 2014 Glad you like the C-145, I knew with some tinkering it would be a good machine, as for the balance gears throw them away.
Desko 624 #3 Posted January 16, 2014 Put them back in never leave the balancers out or you'll have violent vibration that can cause damage to the motor or the tractor.
TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #5 Posted January 16, 2014 Put them back in never leave the balancers out or you'll have violent vibration that can cause damage to the motor or the tractor. While that may apply in certain engines, it does not with the K and M series Kohler singles. I fully agree with Kelly on throwing them away. I'm not sure I agree with Craig on being scared of someone having a drink and eating popcorn. My dad always did tell me not to "wash down" my food though. Fordiesel69 271 #6 Posted January 16, 2014 On the kseries, the gears are slotted and are know to blow. On the magnum they still can, but it is a lot more rare, maybe becuase they aren't old enough yet. But I ave left them out of several 12HP with no issues. There will be one spot in the RPM where the engine will vibrate more. But at idle and full throttle you will be fine. Go with a style D piston and a narrow rod if you can afford it. If you just want to slap it together, the ebay kits work well.
