kohler k301 mysterious noise

Recommended Posts

JamesC-120

I just rebuilt a kohler k301 and did these things bored, new rod and ground crack journal, valve job, new piston and rings, new valve guides, bearings. and i just put it all back together nad at idle i hear this ticking noise coming from the engine and can not figure out what it is and have tried everything. The main reason for rebuild was to get rid of the noise. If you could help me that would be great.

Thanks

Did your K301 have balancing gears? If so, did you put them back in or throw them away?

The ticking could be the centrifugal weights on the ACR.

Was the crank journal ground to the (actual) size of the rod-or just grind crank to a certain size-then order rod too that size? You would be surprised the difference. Does it "tick" only under no-load?-Al

I had it ground exact .010 under and you can only hear it at idle around 1200 rpm

Make a video so we can hear it.

Are you sure the valves are set right?  I have often had to reset them after running the engine for a bit.
