Graeme 7 #1 Posted January 12, 2014 I have a new to me 76-42st01 and the belt alignment was waaay out of whack. By putting a spacer on the two idler/tensioner pulleys and flipping the main drive pulley (pn 8158)closest to the blower hood around I would be able to remedy the issue. Simple enough, right? Well....the spacer part went just fine and swimmingly, however, the main drive pulley, thats another story. Rust was going to wrench some creative language out of me, and after liberal use of penetrating fluid, time, torches, more time, and finally an improvised and somewhat effective puller I got the pulley off the shaft. But, not without making it look like a taco. In the past I have been able to find aftermarket pulleys pretty easily with the help of my local small engine shop. Well, the day I stopped by the owners son wasn't "feelin' it" and told me that the pulley would have to be ordered from Toro because "no one makes a pulley that small in diameter for a 5/8 belt". I tried to get him to read the information on the pages in the catalog in front of him to see what my options were, but I think his eyes were giving him trouble or something because the conversation was ended, if I wanted the pulley I could pay the 72$ for it or forget it. Ha! Not about to do either. A stop around the corner at Tractor Supply and I found a pulley with all the correct dimensions on the shelf, the only thing, instead of 5 1/2" OD it is 5" OD. I figured at 19.99 I could take a chance. I know it will spin a bit quicker, it seems like it holds enough tension on the belt. My question, anyone else have any experience with a smaller drive pulley on the snowblower? Anything else I may be missing here? Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,495 #2 Posted January 12, 2014 Industrial pulleys are measured differently but a 5-1/4" is very common and available with a tapered hub to fit the shaft you just bolt on. Graeme 7 #4 Posted January 13, 2014 I do like the sounds of this 2 piece pulley. I did some initial internet searching, one of the things that threw me off was reference to 5/8 bore. The pulley I bought says 5/8 bore on it, which must be in regard to the width of the belt, normally I would associate bore with being the hole for the shaft. Graeme 7 #6 Posted January 13, 2014 Funny, the pulley I bought must have been mislabeled or something because it says 5/8 bore on it, yet the shaft size is 3/4. Thats what had me confused.
