A brief introduction...

Hello,

I am new to the forum so I figured i should post a hello.  I recently purchased a 1990 312-H with a deck, plow and rototiller.  I've already done a bit of repainting, I should post a picture when i can.

I'm sure that I'll have a number of questions but right now just the one.  I had a rear tire go flat and ordered some new ones online.  What i ordered are 23x8.50-12 AG tires made by Deerstone (I think that's the right name).  I went to have them mounted and my small engine man says that they are to short and will not work with the deck.  They are about 2" shorter, which does not seem to match the size.  I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this and could tell me if despite the difference they would still work.  Any input is appreciated.

Also thanks for this forum, tons of great info for me to pour over.

Of course! The tires that are on it are 23x9.50-12 and they are the turf saver style.  I figure that they are original to the tractor.

The ones you bought should work fine....they are not shorter, just 1" narrower than the old ones. Narrower tires would not interfere with the deck.

By the way, where are you from in michigan?

welcome to Red Square, your tractor should have come with either 22x9.00x12 or 23x9.50x12 or possible the 23x8.50x12 . when you say 2"  to small what way are they 2" to small some picture might help

That will only make the tractor 1" lower in the rear. With the Wheel Horse deck you may need to level it, but it will work find. Some of the Wheel Horses came with shorter rear tires and used the same mower decks. You can find how to level the deck in the Manual Section.

I wasn't very clear with my description.  If you stand the new tire next to the old on it is about 2" shorter.  The numbers should be fine and work out, but it is shorter.  Of course the ones on the rims are inflated and a different tread.

I wouldn't have thought twice about it but the guy who was going to mount them seems convinced that it will ride too low and that I won't be able to use the mower deck in the spring.

It looks like I'm not far from you.  I'm in Almena Township.

If they are smaller diameter than the ones on the tractor then there will be even more room between the front and rear wheels under the tractor for the deck. If the tractor sits lower to the ground, there are adjustments on the tractor and the deck so i don't see why there would be a problem.  If the diameter of the tires is too large then the rear of the deck will hit the larger diameter tires.  I believe the 1990 312H might have the smaller 6" front wheels instead of the 8" but that should not be a problem and if it is the 8" look better anyway.

:WRS:   I agree with the members who think they will work just fine. The rear of the :wh: will be one inch lower, not a big deal, go have fun with it.   :text-welcomeconfetti:

I think they will be fine. When they're mounted and inflated, they will probably be the same height as the old tires or close to it. They definetly shouldn't interfere with the deck. :WRS:

Thanks for the responses. I took the heels and tires to a tire shop today and go them mounted for $20. I just put them on and they look great. The old tires are now just a short as the others were, I do t foresee any problems.

Of course now that I have it back in wheels it won't start, so there is my new problem.

As requested, here are some pictures.Posted ImagePosted Image
