Desko 624 #1 Posted January 6, 2014 (edited) Hello all. I'm new to red square. My question is if I put a p220 onan in my GT-1142 will the 4 pinion rear end with stand it or for sure disaster with the bearings. All I use this tractor for is to mow and snow removal. TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #2 Posted January 6, 2014 That's tough to answer not knowing the current condition of the tranz, If it's still "tight", it should be fine unless it's abused. The "front half" of the tranz isn't any weaker than the 8 pinion 1 1/8" axle models, so the weak link will be the differential. I have seen stock 308/310/312/GT11XX & 16XX models blow the diffs apart, so it's not so much the hp as it is the way it's put to the ground. A loss of traction under full power followed by a sudden grip of the tires can blow apart even the mighty 8 pinion. My advice?: Put it together and work it. If it breaks, swap it over to an "big" tranz. Just because some guys like pictures......... This is an axle gear in a stock GT-1642: These are the teeth that used to be on that gear: The guy was mowing when this one failed.
Desko 624 #3 Posted January 6, 2014 (edited) Wow! The trans is not abused well taken care of along with the tractor regular wash wax and oil changes so i should be good to swap motors. One day I'll get around to tearing that trans open when I find a manual for it Edited January 6, 2014 by Desko
