M14 Bogging/stuttering.

Recommended Posts

Evening Gentlemen,

Been doing a fair amount of plowing tonight :handgestures-thumbupright: and one thing is starting to worry me...

I have an 89' 414-8, and every time I let the clutch out it bogs down, then picks back up. If I let it out really slowly doesn't seem to bog at all. Any help would be great!

Stay warm on the horses tonight guys!

possibilities!

Carb, too rich

Spark plug

compression

Start off simple, pull spark plug, clean with brake cleaner, blow out with compressed air, regap, clean and blow again, try.

Check voltage at battery must be 12.7 or higher all off, test with full RPM, 14.2 or higher up to 15 VDC

While running feel exhaust, should hear/feel each compression stroke.  Listen for piston slap, valve noises

Check oil level be sure it is topped out

Carb, adjust idle speed then full RPM, at very least set to mid point

Clean gas fuel filter, lines, add  Seafoam to remove carbon and water vapour in tank or lines and carb

Test for low and high RPM

At temperature rev to full then back to idle does engine keep up with the throttle, pull pre and main air filter clean, and clean again.  Is throat clean or dirty

Use of high test in a regular engine creates carbon and increases compression.

Do a compression test, will be 90-120 depends on cleanliness of engine…no answer do a leak down test.

Examine the HT lead to the ignition, do an ignition test amount of volts

Make sure engine is not loading up in neutral, then in 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

Can tractor be rolled in neutral

Have you changed drive belt lately

more can come, but this may help

Ok, Here's a few pieces of info to help...

NEW...

- Air filter

- Plug

- Fuel

- Fuel filter

I also recently installed a new throttle cable and need to know exactly where to put the "Z" bend end in the throttle "ear" on the carb.

p.s. will be posting vid.

I also recently installed a new throttle cable and need to know exactly where to put the "Z" bend end in the throttle "ear" on the carb.

The throttle cable attaches to the lever on the lower front part of the blower housing. (flywheel cover)

If you actually have the cable attached directly to the throttle shaft at the carb, you have bypassed the governor.

That will cause the engine to "bog" when applying a load.

Let me be more specific...

Terry, I have the throttle attached to the governor, but exactly which hole on the ear is what I was referring too.

pictures and vid coming soon...

Question, were these items installed before or after the problem started?

Here are the pictures of the governor.

The second is of a spring that doesn't look like it's placed properly...

Just so everyone knows.. I rescued this WH from a Mennonite kid.. so I'm finding new issues every day..

Was it running okay before you installed them?

i would recommend that you go through and check to see everything is connected how it should be. the pics you posted don't really give us much detail.

If I remeber I will snap a pic of a kohler M14 for you when I get home.  I have one I am about to re-ring.  All my linkages work great.

Probably not your problem, but a thought.

It sounds to me like you got a fuel delivery problem.  If you are out in the snow and it's below freezing, you might have some water in the gas and it's freezing.  There might be enough gas to tool around, but when you need more via the governor, there is enough restriction to cause the engine to stumble.  Back off the load, and the engine runs good again.  Could be ice at the outlet screen of the fuel tank, ice in the fuel line, ice clogging your fuel filter or even ice at the carb blocking fuel.

If the tractor was other wise running as it should during warmer weather, my first guess is you've got a freezing water in the gas problem.

Good luck,

Bill

Back at work, back to the 414. Thanks to Fordeisel69, I'll be re-calibrating the governor; seems to have some real issues. I'll keep you guys posted on the progress!

UPDATE: Had a few mins yesterday to work on the governor linkages. A big thank you to Fordiesel69 for the picture; helped a bunch! The throttle/choke travels' seem much better. Still bogging when I throttle up fairly quick, even after it's nice and warm.

Next step is to reset to factory per Wilbro specs to see if that happens; also ordering the carb rebuild kit from Jacks.

Speaking of... If anyone has the part number for a Wilbro WHG 60 rebuild kit that they've used, that would be a big help!

If it stumbles on throttle up, I believe it's the low speed jet that needs to be adjusted.

Good luck,

Bill

Yes, try the low needle.

Here is a thought.  I know you cant upload a video here, but how about on youtube and put a link to it on here.  We could tell right away by just the sound.
