How to identify 418-6 without id badges

Recommended Posts

Graeme

Last week I purchased my first Wheel Horse as an adult (we had a few when I was a kid). It is a 416-8. I spoke to a small engine tech who had worked on it and he thinks it is a 1987. I haven't been able to locate any id tags on it. I suspect someone removed them to paint, or perhaps for other more nefarious reasons. Either way, I am wondering if there are stamps somewhere in steel that will identify my machine so I can accurately order replacement parts. I can tell you that it has a Kohler Magnum, I assume it is the correct motor for the machine, but without id tags, no way to tell for sure, yet.

Thanks and Happy New Year!

No serial numbers that I have been able to locate yet. Here are a few pics, let me know if you need more detailed pics. Well. I have pics, I guess I have some learning to do before I post them. I thought it would be obvious, but.....

from what i just read 1987 was the first year for the magnum, and you don't have a toro decal tractor. i think 1987-89 would be right. I'm sure others will chime in on this, but i think 1987 is right there......

'85/'86 models had a Kohler K341 engine

'87/'88 models had an M16 Magnum

'89-'97 models had Onan P216 engines

I see an '87/'88 up there, but no way of knowing which. :confusion-shrug:

I have a 1988, i dont know if this amounts to much, I dont see the 8 speed decal and I notice the throttle and choke lever knobs are red.

My knobs on those are black and the 8 speed decals are on my tractor to. For whatever thats worth.

The tractor pictured above has had some "cosmetic surgery". :eusa-whistle:

Not necessarily my kind of cosmetic surgery. There are a few minor issues to sort out. Most of the safety switches have been disabled or are even missing, the steering column has a lot of slop in it, the dash lights (the little warning light block) has some issues, it pops fuses when you push the test button, (I ordered a new button for that). I changed the trans fluid yesterday, that was a nice milky mocha colored, I didn't taste it but I'm fairly confident it was old chocolate milk.

So here is an interesting update. Yesterday, prior to joining red square I sent an email to toro with what info I had about my tractor, the same info in the beginning of this question and just now I got a response stating that it is a 1987 model number 31-16K803 and since it is too old to email a copy they are sending a print version via snail mail. I thought that was pretty impressive customer service.

Have to agree with the Toro service. Back in 2009, they sent me hard copies of IPL and Owners Manuals for a 72 Raider via UPS to the UK free of charge   :handgestures-thumbsup:
