HorseWhisperer 243 #1 Posted December 15, 2013 I picked up a 701 a couple months ago.I got to the location and found it was left behind at a small old farm and the new owner revived it and mowed with it.He has since spoke with the original owner/purchaser of the 701.He bought it new in early 1962.It came with the slotted grill that's on it presently.I also had the luck of speaking with another owner of a 701 that drove it into his truck in 61 and it to came with a slotted grill. What gives?Dealer botches?corrections or factory changes late in the year?I know WH never let parts go to waste and my hood is in near perfect condition but it just doesn't feel right with a slotted grill! Kelly 1,033 #2 Posted December 15, 2013 Not sure what to tell you, I have owed 7 of them all had the solid grill, I have seen pics of 1 or 2 with slotted grills I figured they had hood swaps.
rmaynard 16,211 #3 Posted December 15, 2013 I agree with Kelly. Since he bought it in 1962, it sounds like the hood was damaged, and the dealer put a 1962 hood on it. How about posting some pictures so that we can see if there are any other differences.
HorseWhisperer 243 #4 Posted December 15, 2013 It has the correct foot rests, double pulley non compression release kohler,it has the correct dash as well but what else is fishy is the starter relocate because hy 2 didn't come out til 62 and this had the side tower relocate but wasn't needed because the 701 had all the necessary controls in the dash. It's correct and the patina under the add ons is story to believe.Just have a hard time putting a solid grill on it if it didn't come with it! :/
HorseWhisperer 243 #5 Posted December 15, 2013 It has the dash riser supports,it's got the fender to tool tray supports. It has a replacement shifter handle vs bent at the dealer. It seems to be complete and all original but the hood. The stickers on the hood are even excellent. The only thing that was missing was the drive belt guard. It was taken off 30 years ago to change the belt and was run over by a big tractor and trashed! That's the homemade wood handle brake you see in the side view pic! I have a 702 cover to replace it.
