ckarnes 2 #1 Posted December 11, 2013 im looking at buying a wheel horse sb-421 and just wondering if there is anything special about it or if its worth more than a similar wheel horse of the same era. the motor is pulled out and tore apart not entirely sure what is wrong with. it looks like a solid body from what I could see with out digging it out of the corner of the barn. if someone would be able to give me an idea of what I would be safe paying for a tractor like this. any help would be greatly appreciated thanks
boovuc 1,090 #2 Posted December 11, 2013 That tractor was made for one year only shortly after AMC sold off Wheelhorse to a bunch of investors. (1982 only). It used obsolete parts to deplete inventories and was powered by a Briggs 11 horse motor. (Not the most desirable of power plants). Blackhoods were the design then and they were phasing out the squarehoods. Several members have these tractors. They are rare but not a "must have" collectable due to the reasons above. (One year run to clear inventory parts, Briggs engine). There is absolutely nothing wrong with the tractor itself in regard to the transmission, frame, steering, etc. It is pure Wheelhorse garden tractor. If the motor was pulled and is apart and if it's a Briggs 11 horse, it is most likely toast. You can get just about any horizontal shaft Kohler to drop right in that tractor. Price??? Without a motor and maybe other pieces off of it, I hate to opinion to others on prices but personally, I wouldn't pay more than 100 bucks for it without a running motor..........installed. And that would be with all the pieces, PTO, loose engine, muffler, etc. If the tractor is ruff and the tires didn't hold air, I would keep walking. Just my opinion. Not many people own an SB-421! TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #3 Posted December 11, 2013 "SB-421" translates to Special Briggs 42" mower deck 11hp - a model allegedly built to use up parts inventory from the second generation C series machines built in 1978 & 79. They are extremely similar to the GT-2500 Anniversary Special, C-111, and the 1100 Special. I'm with Boo on the "$100 or less". I saved this picture from a CL listing a while back..... probably the nicest original SB I've seen, but they wanted $1200 so they might still have it. rmaynard 16,299 #4 Posted December 11, 2013 Didn't they build the same tractor that year with a 16HP Kohler and call it the SK-486?
