Naturellement 0 #1 Posted December 10, 2013 Hi everyone! First of all, I apologize for all the bad spelling and grammar, english is not my native language… This is my first post here, even tough I have had my 316-8 for three years now. As long as everything works well, I am happy Recently my tractor began running badly, so I decided to give it some love; new oil, filter, spark plugs and a good cleaning. To my surprise, there was no oil filter attached. It looks like someone built around it. Is there any way to mount on a filter again? I can not get it to fit on the mount now… I will try to attach pictures at the bottom. Also, I do not think that it is charging the battery correctly. In the picture below I have photographed what I think is the generator? I can see a "wheel" inside the generator that I think is suppose to run with the bigger metal wheel with teeth on it. As it is positioned now, it is to far in the housing to "connect". I hope you all understand what I am trying to explain It gets really obvious that I do not use english that often! The third problem is with the petrol pump. If I leave the tractor for some days, it will not start without the help of starting gas. After the petrol is beginning to flow, I do not have any problems. Is this normal or something that can be fixed? I am very thankful for all the help I can get. I really want my red beauty to run smoothly when spring comes! Best regards, Naturellement
Racinbob 11,937 #2 Posted December 10, 2013 The starter looks fine. It's not a generator. The gear on the starter moves out to engage the flywheel gears then retracts when you release the key to the run position. I'll let others here help you with the other issues. Your maching looks different and I don't want to send you down the wrong road. Welcome and sit tight. Plenty of help is on the way.
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,489 #3 Posted December 10, 2013 Here is an Onan engine service manual It will describe the testing of the charging system. If the fuel lines are old the rubber is likely hard and that causes them not to seal on the nipples they are pushed onto. The pump will suck air at these connections but they will not leak fuel out. The pump could be weak also. There is also a screen in the fuel tank that can plug up after 21-25 years. I usually cut the screen off and add an inline filter. The 316-8 was sold 1988, 1989, 1990 and 1992. All were exported so we didn't have this model in North America. Not much different than what we did get. See if you can find the data decal on the rear fender pan with the long model number on it. Failing that post all the numbers off the engine and we can try to identify it that way. You can go to https://lookup3.toro.com/partdex/index.cfm?xCaller=Toro and do a search for 316-8 and they will all come up. Garry
Naturellement 0 #4 Posted December 14, 2013 Sorry for not responding to your help, I have been real busy at work… Not as a mechanic, which I'm sure you have figured out already I will not break the starter then, cause that is working just great! Thanks for the manual Garry! Unfortunately, I always panic when I read one. Everything looks so complicated! But there was a good guide on how to check the battery and charging. Will look into that if I get the horse going again! The screen in the fuel tank, what does that look like? I suspect it is already dismounted; now it is only a fuel line going straight in the tank from underneath. The fuel filter is mounted right after the fuel pump. I will look over the fuel lines, if they look old and tired. Does anyone have any ideas about the oil filter? Can I mount one on again in any way? I took a photo of the numbers under the seat. Is that the ones you were asking for? Naturellement
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,489 #5 Posted December 14, 2013 Your model number is written B1-16O802 with a dash. 16=engine horse power, O=Onan engine (letter), 8=8 transmission speeds (they count reverse), 02 is the parts list identifier (numbers). 35229 is the serial number. If you go here https://lookup3.toro.com/request/request.cfm do not enter this serial number. Use the word none for a serial number. 9110 is the Julian build date = 110th day of 1989 Here is an illustrated parts list for your tractor. It is shared with other exported models The oil filter and adapter is on page 48. Page 76 shows the fuel tank and valve. The nipple on the valve that shoves into the rubber bushing has a fine mesh screen on the end of it. If it is plugged it is a good time to clean and rinse the tank after all these years. I use hot water and soap plus a handfull of nuts or bolts so you can shake it up to do the scrubbing. Garry
