KC9KAS 4,744 #1 Posted December 9, 2013 While plowing yesterday (and again this evening), I heard a "squeek" sound once in a while. When I pulled back into the barn, I jacked up the front end and spun each front wheel to confirm my thought and yep, I was right! Front wheel bearings! I removed each wheel and 1 bearing in each wheel was shot, but not the axle or wheel...lucky me. All the bearings, races and seal still have TIMKEN and NATIONAL numbers on them so I plan on locating repair parts tomorrow! I will try to remember to get photos of the problem and repair tomorrow.

Lane Ranger 11,397 #5 Posted December 10, 2013 Ken: How much snow did you guys get in Jasper area? I know Orange County and Monroe got a lot!
KC9KAS 4,744 #6 Posted December 10, 2013 This is at home, but the depth range was 5" to almost 9" north of Jasper...Portersville area. The state roads were bad until Monday, and the county roads will be bad until spring! It is snowing right now and it looks like 1"-2" new snow. Hey....If you want to look at a good web site for percipitation, go to www.cocorahs.org/. You can look at any county in any state. I use this site all the time, but I do not report, as I don't have anywhere on my property that meets the criteria for the gauge....I do have the gauge...actually at dads...I thought he might participate.

KC9KAS 4,744 #8 Posted December 11, 2013 There are many special tools needed to replace/repack wheel bearings. Below are the specific items used for this job.....I have the professional model as well as the "back-yard" mechanic model. You will have to guess which models I have. 1st you will need to clean all the parts you will be re-using. You will need special tools to install the new bearing race in the wheel. You will need to re-pack the new bearings with grease. Universal Bearing Grease Packer Tool

Jack Fate 7 #10 Posted December 11, 2013 Hey thanks KC9KAS , LIKE THE TRAILER BALL driving tool but what is that thing in the last pic? looks like the cross between a wad of gum & a hearing aid I got a set of refurbed wheels I gotta pull the races & replace them .I got several good used bearings & the old wheels have good races ,I don't have a tool (puller?) to remove them without damage so may need to buy new .But I have a great source for bearings any thoughts? KC9KAS 4,744 #11 Posted December 11, 2013 (edited) Hey thanks KC9KAS , LIKE THE TRAILER BALL driving tool but what is that thing in the last pic? looks like the cross between a wad of gum & a hearing aid I got a set of refurbed wheels I gotta pull the races & replace them .I got several good used bearings & the old wheels have good races ,I don't have a tool (puller?) to remove them without damage so may need to buy new .But I have a great source for bearings any thoughts? Yeah, the ball base was a perfect fit to drive the races. Poor people have poor ways! You have to be inovative and use what is available! The gum/hearing aid is a dollup of grease for packing the bearing...I used a lot more, this was the 1st glob in my hand. After loading up the bearing my hands were to greasy to hold the phone/camera. You can drive the outer race from the back, and you can drive the rear race out from the front. If you use a small (long) punch and watch closely, you shoud be able to remove the races without damage. Our WH wheels don't turn that fast, that being said, good (used) bearings would probably last a long time as long as they were cleaned very good, and smooth rolling.
