Restoration Wheel Horse Painting/Spraying HELP.

Recommended Posts

Charlie Smith

Hello All, I seem any of you here in the UK have restored wheel horses,

I've been thinking for a very long time now, and have decided I want to get my little raider 10 painted and looking 100% again! now the biggest dilemma I had was do I hand paint it.... Or get it sprayed, I then decided I want to try and get a 100% top finish on her so have decided to spray it! I have all the Equipment here to do so, but just don't think I'll be able to do a great job!

Now I know I'm going to be looking at a fair bit of money, but does anybody know anyone or anywhere that will spray the wheel horse properly and get her looking top again, where did you lot get yours done? Or did you do it yourselfs?

Many thanks

We do our own Charlie.

Brush painting the bits you can't see is good for covering blemishes and getting a good covering. Spraying is easier than brush painting, just messier...

Unless you have somewhere warm and enclosed though it's not that easy in winter due to more water in the air and the thinners takes longer to evaporate.

You could send the key parts, hood, fender, rims out for professional spraying, then you good a good finish on them. Or you could prep the whole tractor and take it to a local body shop and get them to paint bomb it!

+ 1 for meadowfield on the get the key parts done properly, never done a WH but my usual tactic is bonne, mudguards, possibly wheel get done professtionally and for the rest a good water free compressor, warm day or warm barn and a decent quality spray gun.

I do odd tractor bits and i have a reasonable but nothing special (£50-100) gun. Usually have a practise on some wood or old metal to get thinners and gun settings right and i have always got a presentable finish.

If you get in done professionally save a fortune do the prep yourself as long as you have plenty of patience

i've done a few Wheelhorse's and just compleated a commando 8 for paul mackellow. if your looking at a proper job its going to be £120 for the shotblasting (less engine and gearbox) i do them myself and £150 paint and materals as i always use two pack primer and paint and then other bits like nuts and bolts, decals, tyres, and cables ect.

all depends on how far you want to go

Won't go wrong if you get Chris to do it for you. It really depends on the size of your pocket and how much you do yourself.

Most of us do them ourselves and with varying methods and levels of prep etc.

The main panels and Rear Wheels on mine are Media Blasted and Powder Coated or primed by a local  (to me) guy. I then do the paint etc etc.

A full and proper Restoration back to correct spec will cost lots.....so most of us go for good quality Refurbs.
