After only being involved in my new hobby for the shortest time, WHEEL HORSE. I am amazed to see how moch half ass put together junk I have looked at. Some of these tractors and worn to the bone and not tended to in the least. I have been around mechanical things my whole life, I know the differance between old and cared for. And old, abused, never cared for and ready for a restoration or the scrap heap. The wort stuff is allways pretty darn pricey to. Thats why I wondered if any of you fellows ever put things out to pasture, ( for sale ).  I imagine thats a crazy question, haveing my first tractor, just a few days I want to dig right into it. Dont like working on many things at once, just one thing at a time. but thats me. Dont know if I could sell it either. lol

 

Anyway, will bide my time for the one I want for me. Sooner or later, the needle gets found in the haystack.

I have bought and sold my fair share of tractors which is how I was able to build my small collection. I would look for clean workers with attachments and then get them running right, maybe a repaint and new decals, seats etc. to make them look and run really good again and then resell the package but many times separately. By putting in the work to fix them up I was able to pay for the tractors that I wanted to keep.

I think most here will/have done the same however there are some who have just one or two and be happy with that. One thing I will say about finding them on CL is you better not let the grass grow under your feet and get over there and buy it. The days of waiting and not calling a seller right away in hopes you can get a better deal just do not work. My neighbor has tried that and he misses out on the good deals. Keep your eye out here on the classifieds as most members here are truthful in what they are selling on our site.

I started with 1, now have 9, and will probably have 6 or 7 by the time springs rolls around. I purchase at auctions and private sales, then after doing a little work on them, re-sell to make enough money to purchase what I really want. I currently have a C-120 auto, and a B-100 auto that will be gone by the time the WHCC show rolls around. If not, they are coming to the show and will be be sold there. My ultimate goal is to buy and sell until I can purchase a nice horse with a front-end loader.

These tractors do get sold, modified, messed with but they seem to have a lot of stuff that lasts !   50 /60 years for a lawn tractor is something to take note of in any way of measuring.   I sold three tractors this year and bought three.   None of the buys were great and all of the sales were good workable tractors !   We had one seven years ago, twenty now !

Then, turned around and replaced it with another RJ, a 603, and now the 1267.

Due to a situation beyond my control I had to sell off my herd this year and that was 20+. I still have a couple parts tractors and my "High Horse" which I will hold on to as long as I can. Over the last 3 years I have bought and sold almost only Wheel Horses. You can see everything I have sold on my web site.  They can be really hard to let go but if you enjoy working on them you have to sell some to get more.

I got up to 7 and just did not have the room to hang on to them...down to 4 now and that is a good number for me.  The ones I sold had Techumsehs on them... just kidding...they were good horses...they also had pull starts.

Sold a few regretted one, but I know where it is, have some that I don't know why I keep.  I seem to buy junk and make it look like near new but that is Wheel Horse life on a budget.  Most I ever paid for a single tractor was $200, Farthest driven was 500 miles (it was free.)  Deals are out there but its a right time and place thing.

i have bought  quite a few duffers , sold them to get what i have now . I also sold a few that i didnt really wanna sell but i had to to get to what i ultimatley wanted .

When looking , be prepared for longish road trips & dont be too dispondant when you get there it wasnt as nice as you thought , one day you will get there and it will be better than you thought . those are the ones that you keep & then sell on the duffers .

iI bought one thinking is was really rough because the  sale picture wasnt too good , when i arrived it was virtually immaculate , i still have it

I started with one, was up to 13, no room, down to two, up to three.....you get the idea. They do pop up and like said, you need to be "jonny on the spot" when you see what you want. Bought and sold all types of attachments as well. Have to say, the tractors I have now, I'm sure were free to me at the end of it all. (would prob. be ahead if I didn't help others out with price). The only hobby I've ever gotten into that I can truly say pays for itself.

I got 5 including the Power King and have no room for more. If A good deal comes along I snag it and resell. The profits pay for the trip to PA. If the year is good I have enough to entertain Steve!

fellas, thanks for the replies to date. i want to throw this in the mix. most of you saw in my wayback original thread asking on the 416-8. my needs were outlined there, since i have seen junk to jewels. jewel a really sweet  312-8, with plow, done need the plow. imho i think way underpowered for my hilly yard and to add a snowblower.

 

Then i came about a few more, a GT-14 caught my fancy, its a third owner unit, pretty nice, had a snowblower at one time, that got sold.

my thoughts were the deck was big enough for the lawn, i am concernedvre the 14hp going up my hills, the tractor is heavy, concern number 2 is getting and finding a snowblower for that model. i have read here attachments for the GT are particular to themselves.

 

anyway i am thinking on that one, i like it but still wondering on another model with more horse power. i think i think to much. but when i spend my very hard earned money i tend to do that.

I have sold at somewhere around a dozen tractors I would guess? I  haven't really sold anything special. Only one I miss is my case 155....should of kept it, but was hard to turn down a very good price for it. Have only been buying lately if its a good deal...or something I really want.

Get out there to the tractor shows, antique engine shows and such. Get acquainted with the good people there, with a little patience and persistence, you'll find what you want. My friend bought today, a pretty nice 312 8 for the meager price of $100.00 (no equipment). He met the seller at a tractor show and through casual conversation, found that he had some sort of old wheel horse tractor in his barn. It needs some cleaning up but is in very good condition.

There isn't a good running 12 HP WH Garden Tractor that is going to be under-powered mowing a hilly lawn. Honestly Glenn, when you asked all of us for our opinions, we are giving you what we consider to be our best choices mostly based on us being in the seat of many different WH tractor/motor configurations.

But if you were a golfer and asked a site full of Golf Pro's their opinion about a swing, well, if you took all their advice, you would be lucky to even hit the ball let alone keep in on the fairway!

 

A 12 horse power Wheel Horse with a Magnum or K series engine in good running condition with a 42 inch deck will do what you need it to do for a long, long time.

If you see a 312-8 or 312-H or a C120 8 speed in good condition for a good price, don't hesitate to buy it. Naturally a 14 horse power Kohler is even better!

 

Many people start out Wheelhorse ownership with an Onan-powered monster with the so-called advanced electrical systems or a D series monster with their own set of issues and they can be nightmares to folks not accustomed to cursing and swearing, woops........I mean dealing with and working around problems that really don't exist with simpler-designed C-Series or Kohler powered 300 series tractors.

Just keep this thought when looking: A 12 horsepower K or Magnum series motor in a WH Garden tractor will mow a hilly lawn. I know! I mowed a very hilly shale bank lawn that far exceeded the pitch to safely mow with a C-175 and a C-120. Both tractors mowed it just fine. Both tractors had similar 42 inch SD decks and which tractor paid the price for mowing across and up/down my lawn? My twin-powered C-175. (Needed a top-end rebuild due to oil starvation caused by the hills).

I let go of two this year, a 312-8 and a C125. I think four Wheel Horses is the perfect number for me, although there is each a yellow, green, and orange Lawn and Garden Tractor in the collection that are must haves for me. In addition, JayInNC bought a C165 earlier this year, and after driving it around I had to have one myself so there is a roller here with the K341 engine at the rebuilders shop.

I may have to change that perfect number to 5...................................................

If you look in CL south jersey there is a decent tractor in there for $350. It has been there for awhile so you might be able to get it for less.
