Sickle feeling a bit sick

After filling up the gearbox of our new toy with oil and running it we noticed the oil had moved its self from inside the gearbox onto the floor, which called for sharp action.

Got the box off and stripped today.

The leaking seal (see photo 2) proved hard to find but after a post on here a helpful memeber gave me the new part number. Got one ordered from US.

Im replacing the input seal through matter of course. This happens to be the same as the tractor half shaft and brake seal so i found an ex seal supplier who had a stash of 8 of these and bought the lot. (Come in handy as one tractor leaks and the other may well do once i put some oil in it ready for a go on it)

Hopefully the bits will come before christmas then the job will occupy my few days off work!

Nice job.  I haven't been inside mine, it "marks its spot" but doesn't leak badly enough to bump it up my to-do list.

Looking forward to more progress reports (and pictures!) when you get parts.

My sickle has never been used for years and the previous owner said it was only ever 'tested' and put away again forever. During this time there was no oil in the gearbox. Its bad to tell but the sealing lip was pusshed flat and dry. I have soaked it and run a blunt knife all the way round under the lip and it seems to have regained some flex. I have pushed the shaft back through and filled it with diesel. If all goes well and shows no sign of leakage i may put the box back together with some nice thick oil and keep the new seal as a spare, having said that, looking at the design of the gearbox it has bronze/brass or whatever they are bushes. Due to this i think gear oil sae90 ish would be too thick as it wouldn't go into the wearing surfaces properly.

Im not one for doing a job twice but as its a simple stripdown i might take a gamble and leave the old seal in.

Ive also popped the seal off the ball bearing in the top and put some new grease in.

Ill post more pics when i do some more work at it.
