motox25 36 #1 Posted November 30, 2013 The tachometer gauge on my '91 520H broke off so I ordered a replacement. Is there a way to replace the gauge without removing the steering wheel, steering column, motion and hydraulic levers? I read a post where someone replaced them by removing the screws from the plastic dash cover and metal plate and carefully bending the cover back but even doing that I did not have enough clearance to insert the tachometer. I could probably replace the other gauges this way but the tach is slightly longer than the other gauges.
P3x 57 #2 Posted December 1, 2013 I recently replaced the tach on my 520H (1993). I followed the same procedure as you mentioned; although it is tight had no issues removing the old and installing the replacement. As the weather may be colder depending on your location, you may want to do it in a garage/warm environment or apply heat to the plastic dash overlay if you are concerned about cracking it. Nothing like having an operating tach! Good Luck!
motox25 36 #3 Posted December 1, 2013 Good I'm glad it can be done without removing the steering column, was not looking forward to that. Did you remove the 4 screws near the throttle and choke controls also or just the 6 on the plastic dash?
HokieAg07 129 #4 Posted December 2, 2013 I just removed the four screws on the dash bezel itself....Yes it is a royal pain to do but much better than disassembling the entire dash tower!
