416H electrical question

hi all,  i recently got a onan powered 416H.  i am servicing it and reselling for just my costs to a friend who i am trying to convert to wh from mtd type of stuff.  i believe the voltage regulator did not work when i first got the tractor.  i was getting very low readings at the battery.  i swapped out the voltage regulator with a supposedly good used one. now with the voltage reg. unplugged i measure 45-49 volts ac at the 2 white wires coming from the stator.  the tractor has a 2 year old battery that has been on a floating trickle charger on my work bench. the battery read 13.6 volts  just before i put it in the tractor.  with everything hooked up and tractor running at WOT i read 12.3-12.5 volts at the battery.  the tractor volt meter also reads a bit over 12 volts.  am i good or should it read about 13.6 volts???  thank you.   mike in mass.

Something is not right.....have you tried to test the voltage at the regulator....I have a hair over 14 on mine.....same engine....

I had trouble with the regulator on this engine also...I ran a jumper from the middle post on the regulator direct to the battery from testing purposes....just to bypass the wiring to the switch and back....the regulator has a ground wire attached to the mounting bolt so that should be OK right???  I bought a new one....fairly cheap...

hi trouty56 and karl,  thanks for the response.  no ground wire on mine.  the regulator bolts on with one bolt directly to the shroud.  (engine tin)  self grounding i suppose?  how can i test the regulator???  the local dealer wants $101.  for a new one.  how much was yours if you don't mind me asking and where can i buy one cheaper?  thanks  mike in mass.

So you have the rectifier info....about the ground wire.....on the tractor I have there is a ground wire from the mounting bolt to the hood stand....maybe it was placed there by the previous owner....I have had problems with rectifiers not being grounded properly and added ground wires to them myself.....so maybe it is not factory...but it surely would not hurt.....
