baerpath 517 #1 Posted November 24, 2013 Anyone have one? Does the steering not work when the motor is not running. I looked at one today you can turn the steering wheel without moving the wheels without having the motor running. Don't think that would be right. Just checking Duane
RMCIII 838 #2 Posted November 24, 2013 LXI should have power steering, which in cases, would allow you to turn the steering wheel without turning the actual wheels. How many hours on it, condition, asking price?
baerpath 517 #3 Posted November 24, 2013 (edited) To early to tell auction is next Sat, It looks ruff and I'm not a Kawasaki fan (from the KZ 1000 days) although I'm sure thats not the same. Looks like a smaller deck, looks smaller than my 48's DId they offer a smaller deck on these? Anything I should keep in mind to help control by bidding arm ? Almost forgot shows 892.4 on the meter Edited November 24, 2013 by baerpath
shallowwatersailor 3,214 #4 Posted November 24, 2013 As RMCIII wrote, the Lxi does have power steering which will allow the steering wheel to freewheel when the engine is off. They did have a 42" deck available. I would not go over a grand if it is rough, providing the deck is decent. For an example, I paid $500.00 for my 520xi without a deck this summer with a few less hours. It doesn't have PS and has a Kohler Command instead. It looked worse than it actually was and has cleaned up very well. The 5xi series are decent tractors and very robust. I am always on the lookout for additional ones to buy. Bad for me but they seem to be finally getting popular!
AMC RULES 37,196 #5 Posted November 24, 2013 Beefier that the old 520's John?
baerpath 517 #6 Posted November 24, 2013 If I remember right none of the C or D series attachments work ? This one's a mess looks like they left it outside but a good cleaning and wax would do it wonders.
shallowwatersailor 3,214 #7 Posted November 24, 2013 The 1998, maybe 1999s as well, have thinner tie rods which can break. I still have the originals on my '98 (knock on wood!) but they are thicker on the 2000. The attachments are specific to the 5xi for the most part. The Attach-A-Matic mounts are wider and lower on the chassis. The clevis hitch, but not piece parts, should work as they used the same WH hitch and mounting is used (not the Rear Attach-A-Matic.) The attachments DO come up for sale, though not as often. I just missed a two-stage snowblower a few weeks ago!
baerpath 517 #8 Posted November 24, 2013 If I end up with it I'll have to see what I would need to do to convert my 520H 2stage to a 520LXI one
shallowwatersailor 3,214 #9 Posted November 24, 2013 Duane, looking quickly at the parts diagrams for the 5xi (79360) and the 520-H (79361) snowthrowers, the attachment points deviate as to width and height. There are two different snowthrower frames but I think that the 520-H frame could be made to work with the 5xi. The 5xi front Attach-A-Matic is 13" wide and 11" high whereas the 520-H front Attach-A-Matic is 7" wide and 13" high. Here are photos of the two (the 520xi has the front plow stabilizer attached) plus my Johnny Bucket bucket for a Wheel Horse next to the 520xi for comparison. Craig, the 5xi frame is 10-gauge steel and the last picture is the juncture at the front for the Attach-A-Matic. It almost looks like, without the plastic valance, weights could be made to hang from the front frame member. The 5xi appears to be a logical progression of the 520-H with a true driveshaft and Two-Range Eaton 1100, plus the weight of 350 more pounds. My opinion is that the economy in the late 90's started to slow which may have had an impact on the future of the 5xi, plus "Orange" BX tractors (and others) started to enter the market for a little more money. RMCIII 838 #10 Posted November 24, 2013 Gotta agree with John... After owning some yellow, green, and orange well built garden tractors in the past. These 5xi's are true tanks. I believe the only WH that is heavier is the D250. The smallest one, the 518xi I own, weighs in at a hefty 1,013 pounds without any attachments. Right now, with snow blower, rear wheel weights, chains and cab, it's tipping the scales at 1,500 pounds. That is without my 214lbs. on the tractor. I know my 214 would not have even came close to that weight. As for tie rods, I've not seen any stress marks or areas of weakness, and I am constantly looking over the tractor. Attachments are a little rare, as John mentioned, but if you keep your eyes open, they do pop up. Even ebay is scares on parts. But they are some. John got a great deal on his 520, don't let him kid you. He probably has a bid on it also and is trying to scare you off. Even if the auction does creep over the $1,000.00, it still would be worth it. As you mentioned, a little cleaning and fixing, and that will last you for the rest of your life. Good Luck
whlpny 203 #11 Posted November 24, 2013 (edited) Duane- The Power Steering valve should allow you to turn the wheels even when NOT running. I move mine around the barn all the time. Steering will obviously be hard to turn- you will hear the valve guts when you do this. Edited November 24, 2013 by whlpny
Irv 115 #12 Posted November 24, 2013 (edited) Duane, I'll pm you about one. Edited November 24, 2013 by Irv
baerpath 517 #13 Posted November 24, 2013 All ready bought that one Irv. Still in the truck, only 10 miles to the Texas Road House so that made it worth the trip. 4hr each way
baerpath 517 #14 Posted November 25, 2013 The one Irv mentioned steers without the engine running, not like the one in the auction. Gonna need some new wiring it got a little toasty.
posifour11 723 #15 Posted November 25, 2013 New toy? I don't see it. ;)
baerpath 517 #16 Posted November 25, 2013 This is the ad for the one I bought needs a little work. If I can't save it I'll repower it as a puller. I think a 1.6 Volkwagon diesel would be a good fit http://buffalo.craigslist.org/grd/4132202524.html
posifour11 723 #17 Posted November 25, 2013 Heck of a deal!
RMCIII 838 #18 Posted November 25, 2013 Duane, as mentioned by "posi" that is a steal of a deal. As you also mentioned earlier, a little cleaning, buffing, waxing, and most of that will brighten back up....Another great option, since that entire thing is metal, just have it repainted. If you are unhappy with the results after cleaning it up. Nice score....You will not regret that purchase.
baerpath 517 #19 Posted November 25, 2013 Hardly any of them around my area and now two almost at the same time and both with the Kowy's in them. The dealer by me has a new Diatsu diesel for a 523 sitting on the floor. That would be nice upgrade if the motor is bad in one
Irv 115 #20 Posted November 25, 2013 Glad you got it Duane. I did see a couple wiring harnesses on ebay but they were for a 518 xi and the part # for the 520 is different. Good luck with it.
baerpath 517 #21 Posted November 25, 2013 Hopefully a few new wires and maybe a switch or two and it should run. If not I have options, spare 25hp command and 32hp briggs sitting in the shed. Unless I could make a deal on the diatsu and turn it diesel,
