K181 vs K181

I bought a 857 with a newer k181 replacement motor on it I believe its from 1989 and it sounds and runs different compared to my commando 8 its 1968 k181 the newer motor sounds more high pitched and seems to rev higher was there any differences in the older and newer

Starter generator vs gear starter models do sound different and I am not sure why. 

 

The newer ones had plastic governer gears, vs the old ones had metal.

 

Certain K181's came with a style D mahle piston vs the Style A kohler piston.  These do sound different, and again, not sure why.

This one has the starter generator on it I think the switch it over from the original motor and it had the newer style wabro carb on it but I switched it out to the old carter I like being able to tune the carb

Yes carters are better for tuning and durability.  Just not as friendly on the emissions.
