bowtiebutler956 649 #26 Posted December 8, 2013 Well, I managed to get some of the sheet metal back on the tractor yesterday, as well as a few decals. I really like the way its turning out. I got the block back yesterday, so I focused on the engine today. The engine went together very nicely, and all clearances are within specs now. Finished bolting up most of the accessories to the engine, carb, muffler, shroud, etc.. Also added a few more decals, and I love the way new decals set a tractor off. They are Deestone 23x10.50-12 6ply tires for the rear, and two Firestone 16x6.50-8 Tri Ribs for the front. He'll be with you every time you take that tractor for a ride with a smile on his face. A few months before my best friend passed he gave me his vintage roll away tool box. He inherited it from his father many yrs. ago and it meant a lot to him. I love that tool box, I always admired it. I still have to paint the grill black, and install the headlights. I still haven't started on the mower deck either, but I'll get on that soon. I painted the grill to the OE semi-flat black finish, and installed the headlights as well as the front Case decal. I'm hoping to start on the mower deck tomorrow. SWEET !!!!!!! I love those big tri-ribs on the front! Van, I really like these big tri-ribs as well. They just plain look good. Thanks I finally got around to tearing apart the mower deck, and it wasn't in as good of shape as I had previously thought. Its missing one of its baffles underneath, which is no big deal, as I can build a new one, and weld it in. However the spindle housings are ate up with corrosion! One of them even has a hole eaten clear through it! I recently made a friend who has a bunch of Case tractors, and he said he thinks he has some extras I can get from him, so hopefully that works out. They still make them new, but their almost $100 a piece for just the housing, no shaft or bearings! The replacements are cast iron, not aluminum. The deck itself is still very solid, although it does have a few rust pits, I don't need it to look perfect, but it has to be mechanically sound, as I plan on using it. Here are a few pics. You could bead blast them, fill all the voids with JB Weld, and re-machine to original surface. Or use a file and sandpaper (which takes a mind boggeling amount of time) and for giggles and grins put thread inserts into all the bolt holes. Weld it up? Be serious. The $100.00 each for cast iron seems reasonable. If it were me I'd spend cash for steel, lathe, mill, and weld them, and maybe still have to buy new ones. I'm currently in a tussle trying to re-manufacture clutch fork shafts for my Windolph Crawler. I made new shafts out of cold rolled steel. They twisted immediately. I made two new shafts out of 4140 and had them professionally heat treated, along with a pair of cold rolled shafts. I tried one of the 4140 shafts just this weekend. After re-assembling that entire right side of my tractor, the shaft fractured. Now I start from square one as I think the cold rolled shafts would break too. Thanks Martin, I consider that a great compliment coming from you! I'm very happy to say my friend had a set of good used cast iron spindles assemblies he's sending me! This deck would have been sitting a long time if I would have had to spend $300 on it. Things have been a little tight here lately. I will put new bearings in the spindles when they get here, as they're only $3 a piece. I got to spend a little time working on the deck today. I welded in a new baffle, as well as a few other pieces that had been broke off. This really is a very strange deck design. I have pictures of other decks to go on, for verifying the missing pieces.
