Wishin4a416 2,191 #2 Posted November 17, 2013 Nice! Someday I want to pick up one of those silver ones. They are real scarce around here. Looks to be solid.

boovuc 1,090 #4 Posted November 17, 2013 I like the looks of the twin B&S motors. I know they have their problems but boy they fill in the hood space! Nice purchase!

c-series don 10,037 #6 Posted November 17, 2013 I bought the same tractor brand new in 1984. Mowed commercially for 8 years, tilled gardens, plowed snow and did tons of other stuff. I still have it now and grade my dirt road with a 50" mid mount grader blade. It may not be red but it is a Wheel Horse through and through!! I am going to try to attach a picture of the original receipt that I still have. I know I paid over $ 4000 but you get what you pay for. ( at least you used to! )

zanepetty 117 #8 Posted November 17, 2013 That looks like a good one to me. I can t believe they were that much even in the 80's. What's the difference between the red ones and the grey ones?
Sparky-(Admin) 23,168 #9 Posted November 17, 2013 Nice find. There was a thread way back about the rear axle gearing in the GT-1800's being different and that the tractor was faster than the average hydro WH. I think only the GT-1800, GT-1848 and the 520-HC came with this gearing. You also get the real deep/wide rear rims ( 8" instead of 7") on the GT-1800 that are perfect for 23x10.5 rear rubber. Tires will mount up perfect without the ballooning look that the standard 7" rim give you. Mike..........
Hammerhead 817 #10 Posted November 17, 2013 Good score on that one Chester! Looks like a descent one. KJ
Martin 2,133 #11 Posted November 17, 2013 nice find, i really like my 1848, awesome tractor. just need to sort out the noisy briggs. otherwise very capable tractor. sparky, yes you are right on the ground speed of these tractors. don't leave out the later c series with the eaton, (blackhoods) and I've found a 417H that had the same gearing as well. not sure if that was factory though. my 1848 is noticeably faster than my 416. zanepetty 117 #12 Posted November 17, 2013 So the silver ones are better?
Martin 2,133 #13 Posted November 17, 2013 not sure whether 'better' is the right description. in my opinion the pewter and gray tractors have been in the shadows of the red 400 and 500 series tractors for a long time, just getting the job done every bit as well as them....... they were built as a 'more economical' wheel horse supposedly to get into the john deere dealerships? but they are built with all the good mechanicals the red ones have, without all the bells and whistles. the briggs isn't as popular as the onan or kohler twins in the horses, but with the right amount of maintenance they are a very capable engine. just my 2 cents here..... zanepetty 117 #14 Posted November 17, 2013 OH OK. I've heard that the Briggs aren't quite as good sometimes. I've never had one though.
Callen 64 #15 Posted November 18, 2013 Thanks for the compliments. I'm going to clean it up and see what I can get the factory paint to look like, maybe repaint it. It's pretty straight, has a new spindle and new tierods and a new front rim. All the plating on the dcl and lift handle is still n great shape. The deck has some rust holes in the outer ends and the rollers are shot but it is the quietest deck i've ever heard. It will probably see some snowblower use this winter. kaiser 100 #16 Posted November 18, 2013 i've got the 16hp gt1600, and yes while the briggs is loud and thirsty it's one heck of a worker. i really need to replace the muffler. lol i think i'd rather have the briggs then the onan. once an onan gives you trouble it's hard on the wallet. i really like the twin briggs. mine also has the 8 pinion,1 1/8 axel c series rear end, it moves really well. third is just too fast to mow with that's for sure. enjoy it callen.
