Traded some parts for this basket case. Trans is locked up and hubs are stuck, but I think it'll turn out OK. The PO visits the forum sometimes, so he knows about us.

And the kicker, a Clinton panther two stroke. Don't know what I'll do with it.

Can' tell if that trans is a #5003 or a #5010 from the picture, but I bet it will clean up nice and be a good transmission. :)   Need to see how the brake band mounts to determine.  Nice parts.

Steve, here it is. I don't see a serial number on the tractor, just casting numbers. Where would I look?

There are no numbers that will tell you what trans that is.  The brake band mounts from a vertical post... that is what tells you...it is a WH # 5003 and is for the 1958/1959 RJ's :)   It should clean up nice, and all the bearings and seals are available...used gears are available also...if needed. :)

To drain the fluid out of this trans...take one of the back, bottom plate bolts out and tip the trans in that direction...(no bottom drain bolt) and see what comes out...we can go from there.  It is fixable.

The numbers that you see are just casting numbers, and maybe a part number...tells you when the casting was made, but not when Wheel Horse used it, and the casting is the same for the suburbans...except for if you have a needle bearing where the brake shaft is...and even that is not a guarantee, because Wheel Horse would use those castings to replace the old and damaged ones in the RJ's and suburbans.  It gets interesting for sure...but the vertical mounting for the brake shoe makes it an RJ trans for the linkage to fit. :eusa-think:

Craig,

Yeah, the hood is good. One ding but that's it. Straps are even good.

Once you open that guy up, with pictures, we can tell if it is an early 58RJ or later, or if someone has been in it already...depends on the number of teeth on the bull gear and the mushroom gear.  These are like a box of chocolates...you never know what you are going to get, until you take a bite of it. :)  I have plenty of videos on these transmissions...if you need them.  Looking forward to see what you find.

I would send a PM to Clintonnut..(Charlie) about that Clinton...he, or his Dad may know what they would have used it on...and may have parts if you need them. :)

Steve,

Ill have to talk to Charlie. I read that these were used for go karts, etc. Kinda leery of using a two stroke in this application.
