Round hood....

Recommended Posts

Shuboxlover

I have a heck of a time dating these....I'm getting a little bit better, but have a long ways to go.

What is this guy?  Obviously not the original motor.

My guess is a 1960 or 1961

Thanks

Looks like a 60 400 or 550. Has the solid seat pan...and I think I see the back and forth throttle cables?

Take a picture of the choke/throtle area on the rear of the hood, it will tell the whole story.

You're right with the 60/61. 60's had a three piece plate design rear, 61 had the casted two piece. 60 had throttle levers, 61 had pull knobs. The 551 had a cutout in the hood frame for the battery. Your hood frame looks like solid piece of sheet metal. If it was a 61, it'd be a 401. Most likely a 60's model you have though. Looks nice either way. :handgestures-thumbupright:

It's a 1960 tractor and probably a 400, but the 400 and the 550 were the same tractor with different engines. The clutch pedal is a 1960 version.

Looks to be in decent condition and they never cut the hood.

I'm jealous!  That's a great example of a Middy-Suburban in it's natural colors.  I hope you get it!

When you retrieve it, you may be able to discern whether it's a 400 or 550 by these clues....

  1. if there is no hole or a plugged hole in the "dash" area of the hood to the right of the steering column it is a 400.
  2. If there is a hole with a switch, it's a 550.
  3. If there is an empty hole, check the front edge of the tool box under the seat for two small holes where the solenoid would have been mounted.  If no holes, it's a 400.  If has holes, it's a 550.

Of course unless the owner knows, this is all just speculative.  Parts were 100% interchangeable, and you're talking about a tractor that is now 53-54 years old.

If I were betting.... my guess would be earlier 550, based on the fact it has the solid pan seat, tool box and fenders (standard on 550) and a replacement engine.  Be sure to ask if there is an original engine laying around anywhere.
