Hello there was wondering if there was a lot of difference between the hp on throwing distance on the snow say between 12 to 16 hp kohler engine machines? also what can I expect for throwing distance norms of normal dry and wet crappy?

Sure is:

You need about 5hp just to move and drive the tractor with all the weight on it, (with a good engine tuned & running right), so now you have 7hp vs 11hp to power the auger to throw snow (50% more working power).  Often the elements require more than that 5hp to power the tractor (ice, sloop, snow piles).

The extra power will throw the snow a little further (maybe; 12' vs 16', but the greater power can handle a lot more snow, deeper snow, faster and would be a lot better with wet snow than the 12hp engine.  Wet snow and slush just seems to fall out of the chute, less plugging with the 16hp.

But, a worn down, old, untuned 16hp could preform much poorer than a strong 12hp  (comparing K to K-series, or Mag to Mag-series)

Use fresh gas, light oil, 20psi in tires and lots of weight for best performance (be sure you have some weight on the front tires for steering control with the snow thrower down).

Inside, and an engine warmer way up there in Maine might help too.
