rydogg 186 #1 Posted November 7, 2013 It's been a quiet summer I have been trying to downsize and only buy horses and attachments that I really want but I couldn't resist this one for the price. 1991 520H Onan runs but only on 1 cylinder I haven't taken the time to figure out what is wrong with the rear cylinder hopefully just a valve seat. Previous owner added a set of tines to the tiller so it is a 42 inch, I was digging around and found some hubcaps and some misc parts, cab is nice and was mounted on the tractor but I figured it wouldn't do very well at highway speed so I removed it. This was always garage kept and well maintained so everything works great, only 690 hours. Now to repair or part out????

Sparky-(Admin) 23,168 #4 Posted November 7, 2013 Now to repair or part out???? ....or repower it with something cool. Diesel...Briggs Vanguard V-twin, something along those lines. Heck even a Kohler Magnum 16 single would be a sweet swap! Mike.......

Heck even a Kohler Magnum 16 single would be a sweet swap! Mike....... I like the diesel idea. I located a 20hp Onan that was removed from a 520 and has already had valve seat problems repaired I could probably get it for $300. I am going to heat up the shop tonight and take off the head and determine the damage.
JackC 617 #6 Posted November 7, 2013 Nice haul. I never part anything out. That building looks dangerous for the addicted. Looks like it will hold a lot of horses and attachments.
varosd 1,185 #7 Posted November 7, 2013 Agree Save!
rydogg 186 #8 Posted November 7, 2013 Agree Save! I am thinking that if the Onan has a broken rod or bad cylinder I will just part out the engine and put that $ towards a replacement Onan, diesel, or some other twin cylinder.
AMC RULES 37,196 #9 Posted November 7, 2013 You could always part just those hubcaps out to me. Another nice haul there Ryan.

ericj 1,579 #11 Posted November 8, 2013 yea i would save it and hang on to the onan for parts if nothin else. good carb, starter, coil ignition module and thing you don't even think of till you need it. i have been picking up every broken onan that i can find at the right price of course just for parts just encase i may need something and it has payed off more than once. good luck eric j

546cowboy 302 #13 Posted November 8, 2013 When I first started with these I got a 520 with a broken rod and the addiction started. I also started watching, you-know-where, and buying 520 and Onan parts just in case. I have no 520's left but I do have a cabinet with parts for both and it isn't a small one either. I do have a roller I was going to use those on but I don't have the time now. Anyone interested?
Wheel Horse Kid 105 #14 Posted November 8, 2013 WOW! Great score there! Looks like you got some great attachments, plus the tractor looks to be in good shape cosmetically! It's up to you whether you save or part out the tractor. I know for a fact that 520 parts and Onan engine parts are bringing lots of money these days. Just something to think about. I guess it depends on whether you want to keep the tractor or not.
leeave96 490 #15 Posted November 8, 2013 Nice score. I hear you on having to many tractors. I've been wrestling with what to do with my latest 520H that I hauled home. Turns out it's a bit to nice to part out and use parts as I planned, so I'm thinking a re-engine - even if it's a used engine for a patch. So - my vote is keep it! Good luck, Bill
rydogg 186 #16 Posted November 9, 2013 You could always part just those hubcaps out to me. Another nice haul there Ryan. Sorry Craig, the hubcaps sold today. I think I am going to try to sell the rest of the package since I have my eyes on a corn/pellet stove for my shop, I want to keep it heated full time but wood is a pain to deal with. rydogg 186 #18 Posted November 19, 2013 UPDATE....I sold my C121 and decided to keep the 520 around until I could determine the engine situation, pictured below is the damage I have a feeling I will be parting out the Onan since it will need crank work and the block has some deep nicks from the broken rod. The future of the tractor is yet to be determined.
Shynon 7,482 #19 Posted November 20, 2013 Wow after hearing it run I was betting on a valve seat. I guess I would part out motor. Tractor is in great shape I would look for another motor.
Wheel-N-It 2,976 #20 Posted November 20, 2013 No glueing those parts back together! Time to Re-Power
rydogg 186 #21 Posted November 21, 2013 After seeing what the 520 parts are bringing on ebay I think I should part this one out and get a nice one that already runs.
6wheeler 669 #22 Posted November 22, 2013 (edited) Don't part it out. I repeat. Don't part it out. This is your inner wheelhorse fanatic speaking. Fix Fix Fix . Or sell the rolling chassis to someone with a spare engine, and a 48" deck that needs a place to hang around Edited November 22, 2013 by 6wheeler
