Tractor Storage

One problem we have is that our collections can grow to the point where undercover storage becomes a problem.  Most of my tractors are the size of the 400 and 500 series.  I am thinking about having some sheds built to store some of my tractors.  I am thinking about sheds that would be 8 feet deep by 12 feet wide with 2 doors along the 12 foot wide side.  The shed would essentially be a two bay tractor garage providing easy access to either tractor.  The 8 by 12 dimensions should make the sheds easy to build and they would be small enough to relocate if necessary.  More could be built as the collection grows.  Does anyone have similar sheds (or even different) for their tractors and have designs or pictures to share?

Also, has anyone tried to use a double wide enclosed snow mobile trailer to store two tractors?  Those are usually at least 8 feet wide by 10 feet long and look like they will hold two tractors without attachments.  Sometimes good deals come up on those.

TIA

Carter Lumber, 84 Lumber, - those guys sell the barn trusses. You could just by a couple more and keep adding on as your collection grows.

An 8'x12' building will get small in a hurry even if you just have tractors without any attachments. Besides that those get pretty expensive if you are talking about those pre-built ones on skids. A better option might be to buy those metal ones that are like car ports. You have seen them around with the signs on them for $799 or so. The ends are open and the side walls don't go all the way to the ground. You can either build ends and sides or use tarps to close them in. Building materials are getting really expensive if you haven't been to one of the Big Box stores or a lumber yard in a while.

Most machinery sheds on farms just have a slanted roof so no trusses would be needed. You could look into getting some of those cargo containers they use on ships. They are cheaper than building a lumber one of comparable size and can be moved without any damage. People are using those to build houses by putting them together.

Depending on how many you have out, one guy buy's all the plastic calf hutches he can find cheap at auctions. Their perfect for one tractor storage, A WH fits perfect with the deck off  Usually you can get them from $50 and up off C list. And I've seen the larger ones that would hold two getting cheaper

I used my two place clam shell snowmobile trailer to store three short frames every winter while my snowmobiles were in the garage. I just switched them out every spring and put the snowmobiles back in the trailer.  I also used the trailer to haul the tractors to shows.

I know what you mean about running out of room.  I had several tractors in the garage and 4-5 more under one of those portable garages. 12 x 20 still didn't meet my needs. I'm in the process of building a new garage to house my addiction :woohoo:

a temporary option that has come to be more permanent for me is I rent a 10'x20' storage unit.  Cost is about $100 a month or less depending on how much security you want.  I currently have 5 or 6 tractors in mine now with lots of other house hold stuff stored in around and on top of it all.  Shop around you would be surprised at how much difference there can be in the price of the units, especially if you don't care about fenced in limited access and video surveillance.   Yes I would rather put the $1200 bucks a year towards building something on my own property but I don't have that option available in my rented lot.

Another option that some of the local farmers use around here is to buy an old semi trailer.  The local farmer said the cost was between $1000-1500 and he stored his full size JD and Farmall machines in it.  Basically you dig a big pit in the ground and back the thing in.  The freight companies will deliver it.  SInce it has wheels, it is moblle and the municipality may not be allowed to tax it.  Zoning regulations may be the only barrier depending on where you live.

I found a partial solution to my tractor storage problem.  I looked at some snowmobile trailers and I was going to buy a 12 X 8 clam shell but someone beat me to it.  The next day something even better showed up on Craigslist.  I jumped right on it and told the seller I would be there first thing in the morning.   He was selling a Renegade 8 X 12 all aluminum enclosed trailer with both rear and front ramp doors.  He bought it for his Harleys but never wound up using it except for storage.  The trailer has duel axles, 14 inch wheels and tires, electric brakes, interior lights and a tongue jack.  I should be able to fit 4 tractors without decks in it.  The thing is a beauty.   I paid $2,300 for it and it is better than any shed I could have built or purchased, It also gives me a roomy enclosed trailer if I ever need one.

Here are some pictures of the new home for some of my horses.

I once purchased, my daughter now has it for over ten years, a box from a straight truck.

Rolled into place back of my property on rollers, jacked up and set down on railroad ties.

Roll up door, side door, metal frame, sheet metal sides and roof. All for a couple of hundred bucks.

Check your local junqué. :)
