I'm in a whining mood!

I guess I’m in a whining mood this afternoon. For those who saw some of my previous posts you should know that I had a nice herd of red when we lived in Indiana and restored several. They’ve been a hobby since 1960. Living in Florida I was lucky to find one down here, a 2005 Classic GT. I’m retired now and I would love to find a RJ, suburban or maybe a early/mid 60’s front engine round hood to restore. Find one in Florida? Good luck with that. I ran Craigslist ads in Orlando, Daytona, Jacksonville, Ocala and St. Augustine a couple months ago and again a week ago. Just one call and he had a 76 (ish) C160 auto. Nice resto tractor but not what I’m looking for. A couple of people contacted me and said they have a Bolens, Sears or whatever but no Wheel Horses. We were up in Indiana the first week in October and I looked then but maybe it was good that I didn’t find one. We had my wife’s car and wouldn’t have been able to haul it. Persistant I am. I’ll just keep on looking with the dream that I’ll run across one and, as with most Floridians, the owner won’t know what they’ve got and let it go for a song or at least a reasonable price.

Maybe a classified ad here on  :rs: would work better for you.

I can sympathize with you. I started my collection in Florida and they all came from up north. We always took a trailer when we headed up to visit family, never came back empty. Now we live in the mountains of Western NC and can't find a :wh:  around here; but I still have the trailer.

Good luck and when you get one :wwp:

Nephew lives down in Venice, he found a nice low hour very well kept 312-8 for a song and a dance. Owner just had no clue what he had. I made a trip down there from Northern Indiana and took two of his horses he had up here. I have made a couple of trips to visit and each time I do I haul a horse down to him. He has the same problem, can't find anything Wheel Horse down that a way.

I wish I could say S-C PA was better... I can't find squat in the way of round-hoods around here... I'm really itching for a Middy-Suburban

I think the main problem putting :wh: 's into new hands is going to be the distance involved here.

I just had three U-Ship quotes last week, to move a tractor down the east coast...

from NY. to GA. runs in the mid 6-700 dollar range.   :scared-eek:

That's great that your nephew found the 312-8 down here. I was able to find my Classic GT in Pinellas county which was about a 130 mile drive one way. I can't say I got it for a song though. The deal was $1200 but the guy was nice and felt bad that we drove that far and it needed all new belts so, after my wife pulled out the cash for him he took $200 off without me even asking. With a good cleaning, belts, seat, headlight bezels and some misc. It's really a nice machine that only had 108 hours on it when I bought it.

Craig, you could be right but I'm not in a good position to drive three states away to pick one up. With so few Wheelhorses down here the number of members that are within a days drive would be quite low so I figured Craigslist might work better. I figured the shipping would be expensive. We do get to northern Indiana now and then so when a trip is planned I stert looking. Then I just have to convince my wife to take my truck instead of her car. At more than double the mpg that's a tough one.

I had trouble finding an 854 anywhere near me in central VA.  I found a half-way decent one for sale in northern Ohio, which was 550 miles one way!  I decided to bite the bullet and make the trip to pick it up rather than try to ship it.  It was a long 18-hour round trip, but I made it in one day.  Now that I see some of the shipping quotes mentioned in this thread, it was worth the nearly $200 in gas and my time to pick it up myself.

I didn't end up making it this year, otherwise I would have tried to get one.  I really don't want to have to lay down $3-500 for one without attachments, though.  I almost got one a few months ago, but it was a complete basket-case.  Only reason I considered it was the snow-blower but even that looked bad...  You couldn't see any paint on either, the rims and tires were shot and it looked like it had half an engine on it.  $150 seemed steep to me for what was there.

Good Luck with your search! I can sympathize with you even up here in Northern Indiana. I wanted a RJ/Suburban and it took be a long time to find one that was in decent shape and complete.
