Mr. 856 170 #1 Posted November 3, 2013 I swear my pickup tube was "eaten" by my gunk cleaner. unless im having a brain fart I put it in there awhile back........forgot about it went to retrieve it and its gone! would gunk carb cleaner dissolve copper if left in there for say.......6 months. LOL oooppps. so here is my dilemma. I cant put my hands on the original. new ones are apparently obsolete. what are my options? simple piece of copper tubing from the local home depot or the like? I do have what appears to be some break line I might be able to use. has anyone ever tried a piece of rubber gas line? this is why you don't start rebuilds prior to having your first child. LOL I see the light at the end of the tunnel but little things keep popping up. any help would be appreciated. thanks!
Martin 2,133 #2 Posted November 3, 2013 (edited) if you are talking about the fitting that screws into the bottom of the metal tanks with a mesh sock on them, they are available at napa or some of the online stores....... http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/CatalogItemDetail.aspx/Fuel-Shut-Off-Valve/_/R-SME702351_0215387912 while your picking up one of them get some 1/4" rubber gas line and a filter and you should be all set..... stevasaurus 23,274 #3 Posted November 3, 2013 Zanepetrty just got done making one from soft copper and 2 compression fittings from the hardware store. He said it is working great. The piece from the fuel pump to the carb...right??
wallfish 18,071 #4 Posted November 3, 2013 Yes, you can use rubber fuel line too. Buy 2 fittings http://www.psep.biz/store/fuel_fittings.htm and attach a small piece of fuel line. You can use 2 90s or 2 straight fittings, either way works fine.
Mr. 856 170 #5 Posted November 3, 2013 yes im talking about the copper line from the pump to the carb. I have the fittings, bought new rubber inserts as the originals were shot. Thought to myself "oh yah didn't I put that in the can to clean up?". well im not sure if I even put it in there but if I did then its gone-zo now. thanks for the options fellas. just what I was looking for. Martin 2,133 #6 Posted November 3, 2013 I'm sorry, i misread your title.... yes like the others said you can use soft copper or rubber fuel line and fittings. i have replaced mine with brake line (bundy tubing) and 1/4 compression fittings on most of my tractors with good results. the soft copper like steve mentioned would seal easier than the bundy tubing, but I've had no leaks on any of mine that I've replaced...... heres a typical installation of mine with the bundy and compression fittings.......
stevasaurus 23,274 #7 Posted November 3, 2013 Dang, Martin, That picture just looks fantastic...I think I have been looking at it for about 15 minutes now. Is that bundy tubing flexible...like soft copper or do you need a bending spring??? I have not seen that before.
953 nut 59,786 #8 Posted November 3, 2013 I would stay away from rubber line after the fuel pump, with the ethanol gas today it can break down rubber and could spray out near the muffler; not good!
Martin 2,133 #9 Posted November 3, 2013 (edited) you need a bender steve. heres all the tools you need to cut, bend and even single or double flare if you need to...... in order to create lines like this. i like to keep things looking tidy if you know what i mean........ stevasaurus 23,274 #10 Posted November 3, 2013 Yes, I thought so...used those tools back in the old days at the gas station I worked at...some times we would make and bend our own brake lines (and they had the flared ends). Very cool...you are a craftsman Martin...those pictures look great. I would not mind having a set of them to use, but it would be once in a great while. I have a real good set of bending springs for using soft copper...makes it look OK and it works...but I probably would not look at the picture for 15 minutes.
Mr. 856 170 #11 Posted November 5, 2013 I would stay away from rubber line after the fuel pump, with the ethanol gas today it can break down rubber and could spray out near the muffler; not good! if this were to happen, id better run out and buy a lotto ticket. thankfully that line is on the opposite side of my exhaust and the force of the fuel pumping out the pump would hopefully get it even further away from the engine. I think I have a better chance of seeing Elvis then having a gas line rot out on a machine that is in my hands. I found, I believe it was 1/8" or there about's fuel line fits rather nicely into the new rubber inserts I got for the carb and pump fittings. I believe this is my cheapest alternative since I have the line anyways. if it leaks and I don't expect it will ill go the brake line route. I imagine the I.D. of the copper pipe wasn't much more then 1/8"?

Martin 2,133 #13 Posted December 31, 2013 fittings from the local farm and fleet store, brake line from napa or farm and fleet......
rmaynard 16,290 #14 Posted December 31, 2013 Original anti-shake fittings with the rubber inserts are still available from Kohler, but they are expensive. I found the OEM for them and buy them for about 1/4 of Kohlers price. Always nice if you are trying to keep it all original.

boovuc 1,090 #16 Posted February 8, 2014 (edited) I should get a new kit. My bender hasn't worked in a long time. (I had to replace my line last summer when I walked into the shed and was overwhelmed by a gasoline smell). Soft copper on 1/4" fittings for the 867.
