New Proposed Ethanol Standards (E15)

Recommended Posts

boovuc

If I may ask this question......................if and I only say, "if" E15 fuels, (15% ethanol maximum in gasoline), becomes the norm and 10% ethanol fuels go away, would our old Onan's, Kohlers, Lausons, Clintons, Teckies, Wisconsin and B&S's run it?

I have major doubts and wonder what our alternatives are besides running store bought fuels in gallon cans at 5 bucks a gallon.

I have a bit of a background in

Racing and high performance

Engines.

The simple answer to your question

Is yes. E-85 uncut has an octane

Rating of 106. It does have 30%

Less BTU content per gallon. The

Only downside is that it is corrosive

To aluminum. Used uncut you

Need stainless steel fuel system

Components. Stabil and others

Are making additives just for this.

I would not leave the fuel sit in an

Engine you do not plan to use on

A regular basis.

I am now running ethanol-free gas in all my horses, as well as the leaf blowers, weed wackers, and chainsaws. After I saw what it did to the fuel lines on my leaf blowers, and the gas cap on the Stihl chainsaw, and after $40.00 in parts plus a couple hours of my labor, I decided it wasn't worth it to put that e-crap in my small engine powered machines ever again. So I just purchased 25 gallons of e-free gasoline at a station 30 minutes from me for $4.10 per gallon. That should get me through leaf and snow season, then I will make another run to fill up the containers again in the spring.

I can only imagine what e-15 would do to my equipment. :handgestures-thumbdown:

Before ordering parts and fixing my backpack leaf blower myself, I got a price to have an authorized dealer do the repairs. Get this - $48.00 for parts, plus $125.00 labor. Doing it myself, it cost me $20.00 for parts, and took about 1/2 hour to repair. I don't begrudge anyone a profit, but...

Yeah, but at some point that penetration into your wallet should become criminal.

We got a couple of stations nearby that sell the ethanol free premium. Still I buy the SEF brand fuel in 4 cycle and 50:1 qt. cans from my OPE dealer for winter storage. They say the stuff keeps for 3 yrs.

I've been using ethanol premium for most of this year now. its all i buy for everything including my truck. the cost difference isn't really that much, some of the stations around here sell ethanol free gas in one grade or another, most of the premium is 100% ethanol free, i say most but not all are, you really need to check. there are test kits available where you can test the gas. there are websites such as http://www.pure-gas.org that list ethanol free gas. running it in my truck it costs me about $6 -$7 more a tank than the cheapest grade. i also could use e85 gas as the truck is flex fuel, but you don't get the same mpg and I'm trying to keep that ethanol junk away from my engines so that would be pointless.........

in this area they are really pushing the ethanol in all different grades, i just hope that the stations i use keep supplying the ethanol free stuff........

Bob, If you think 10-15 % alcohol causes havoc in small engines,  you should see what happens to a 200HP 2stroke boat motor when a slug of the alcohol that has separated from the gas and absorbed all the water from your 100gal. fuel tank finds it's way past your fuel/water separators and is sprayed into one of the cylinders. :confusion-helpsos:   The water turns to steam and blows the side out of the cylinder. And if you are unlucky enough to own an older boat with a fiberglass fuel tank, the alcohol dissolves the resin and leaks the 100gal of fuel into the bilge.  If you are lucky the automatic bilge pump kicks on while no one is on board and your boat becomes the worlds biggest "roman candle". :banghead:

Talked with my local gas supplier, he has 92 octane no ethonal. I use this in all small engines and the HD. He told me he may not sell gasoline if they raise to 15% as he will need to buy new gas pumps, the current ones he has will not last at 15%. I think this is how the big companies will shut down all of the mom and pop stations. He is a third generation owner, been the here long as I can remember.

Keep in mind, our goverment is doing this because it is in our best intrest. :ROTF:  Or was that the best intrest of the special intrest.

If you go to buyrealgas.com you can find stations that sell "e-free" gas. It may cost a little more, but you don't need to doctor it up so the end cost is less. :deadhorse:

Yeah most of the mom&pop stations are gone now due to EPA regs, causing owners to either replace their tanks or shut down

The big companies like the regs, they know they just add the cost at the pump. They ***** about the regs and the pols ***** about the big oil companies ripping us off,but they are both just playing the game.
