what engine do I have

Can anyone help me identify my engine. It is on a 88,89 414-8. I can read some # . I believe it is M149, next # 601540? and only read last 6 #'s that are 110353 . thanks. Is there a Kohler motor # M149?

You have a 14 horsepower Kohler. Magnum.  The Model # M14S with a spec # 601540.  That is the correct engine for your horse.  M14S...not M149...hope that helps. 

 

The weird thing is when I go on the Kohler site to find your engine...there is no M14S and no M14 for that mater...just M12, M16, M20 ETC.  The Wheel Horse paper work says for your horse...a 1988/89 414-8 has a 14 horse Kohler...M14S-601540...I don't get it.

It might be a 1987 no sure tractor #'s are 3114K804, 35323 and 9257 these #' are clear and right.

31-14K804 is a 1989 414-8

35323 is the tractor's serial number

9257 is the Julian build date - 257th day of 1989 - Thursday September 14, 1989

The Kohler serial numbers in 1989 were 10 digits so should be 19xx110353. A tractor built that late in the year should have a 1989 engine.

 

The owner manual does not show the M14 but the service manual does.
