raptor0192 2 #1 Posted October 30, 2013 Hi guys, Inherited by grandfather's old 308-8 21-08K803 tractor. Was thinking of using it for clearing snow. What do you recommend for attachments? I was told the 8HP was not enough for the snow thrower? Can it handle the 48" blade well? Thanks, all! Ryan
Jim_M 179 #2 Posted October 30, 2013 (edited) It will handle a blade just fine, but with a 48" blade in heavy wet snow you may have to take a partial blade width. I would reccomend a 42" blade for a 308-8 though, because it's lighter, easier to lift and easier on the dash tower. I used one for several years with a 42" blade, wheel weights and tire chains and it did just fine, didn't use much gas either. Well, I have a bunch of old pamphlets that my grandfather had, and it says the 42" blade doesn't fit. It only says the 48" "dozer" snow blade will work..... And a 42" thrower. raptor0192... , and Thanks! And I don't have any. I had the tractor stowed away in the shed for the winter already. If I can find a plow blade for it, I'll be digging it back out to use! Then I can photo it.
Jim_M 179 #5 Posted October 31, 2013 (edited) Huh. Never looked at the manual, I just put a 42" on it and called it good. Edited October 31, 2013 by Jim_M
raptor0192 2 #6 Posted October 31, 2013 (edited) And yours was a 308-8? And did the blade connect at the rear of the tractor? Look here at 21-08K803, attachments: https://homeownersolutions.toro.com/portal/server.pt/community/product_center/217 42" not listed. In the pamphlets, the 42" blade was listed and checked for some other tractors, but not the 308-8. So that's odd. leeave96 490 #7 Posted October 31, 2013 Your 308-8 will handle a 42, 48 plow no sweat. Might want to add some weight. It will also pull a moldboard plow with ease too.
raptor0192 2 #8 Posted October 31, 2013 But no on the snow thrower? Won't work too well? I HAD been looking at this listing, which has the thrower, weights, chains and a blade, until he said the blade was home-made by someone: http://altoona.craigslist.org/grd/4132164126.html And we can't upload photos directly here, I assume? He sent a couple photos of the blade. But I want the right thing, not this blade.
stevasaurus 23,281 #9 Posted November 1, 2013 Your horse will handle a snow blower just fine (42"). With the hi/lo transmission, no problem at all. I have one on my 7 hsp 702, and it works just fine.
raptor0192 2 #10 Posted November 2, 2013 But pretty slow going? And I have some incline on part of my driveway.
stevasaurus 23,281 #11 Posted November 2, 2013 Depends on the snow you get...depth...wet/dry. You may want chains anyway, if you have an incline. I was just saying that your horse would handle a blower just fine. Sometimes, you just need a blade...and sometimes you will wish you had a blower. I have one of each set up. raptor0192 2 #12 Posted November 2, 2013 So what do you guys think of that craigslist listing? My driveway is also a fine grit pavement....will the chains rip it up too much?
stevasaurus 23,281 #13 Posted November 2, 2013 If you spin the tires, they will dig in. The trick is to have the traction with out spinning the tires...2 link chains would be better then 4 link. There are a few threads on this site concerning snow chains if you do a search. The amount of incline you have will have a lot to do with it. That is why, I like moving snow so much more then cutting grass...you have some choices to think about and make.
raptor0192 2 #14 Posted November 2, 2013 How about that listing? The blade from it I wouldn't use. I'd want the OEM one.

953 nut 60,110 #16 Posted November 3, 2013 The weights and chains alone will set you back about $100. My guess would be the blade will have a brackit with it that will work on a . If the blower has all the parts to attach it the package deal sounds good.

If the blower has all the parts to attach it the package deal sounds good. The blade is some home-made thing as I said. Someone else said they wouldn't use it based upon how it was built. I'm checking on the part numbers on the blower and weights, and the chain size. I want to make sure it will all fit my tractor. And yours was a 308-8? I was wondering what it attached to back there.
stevasaurus 23,281 #18 Posted November 3, 2013 (edited) It is not a bad deal...but all the parts for the blower need to be there. There is a flat pulley that maybe attaches to the frame, the flag and tubing that the flag goes into (these attach to your lift arm). I do not see the handle that turns the chute either. The blower itself looks good. Edited November 3, 2013 by stevasaurus

timo4352 147 #22 Posted November 3, 2013 I see the chute turning arm and bracket in the pic - disconnected & laying flat on the dolly. But I don't see the lift tube or flag there. You'd have to go look. Make sure you know what to look for before you go. The manuals section here can help with that. You would not want the side extenders on there for an 8 horse. My manual says not even for a ten horse - above that I guess you're OK with them. I don't see any plow pics there unless I'm missing something

Since I can't upload them here, I'll get them on flickr or something and link to them. I can ask for more photos of the blower stuff.
raptor0192 2 #25 Posted November 4, 2013 (edited) These are the plow photos: http://www.flickr.com/photos/35450371@N04/10670762224/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/35450371@N04/10670761734/ Also said the thrower was used on a 314, and that he didn't use the blade himself since he had an ATV with a plow. And he said he thinks the chains were used on 23x9.5x12 tires. Mine are 22x7.5x12. Will the chains work? He says all parts are there for the blower and to lift it.
