Conversion from magneto to battery ignition

Recommended Posts

groundhog47

Discussing my K-241 with magneto ignition, rope start or a similar configuration has anyone converted to battery ignition. Obviously a battery and coil would be required and of course if chargig battery, a gen stator and associated flywheel should be needed. Is there a slight variation in firing time with magneto as to  battery,  or is all same with exception of power (battery) source to coil/points. Searched topics and found no definite results but did find valuable info on rest of system: http://www.mywheelhorse.com/graphics/file/z_Other/ESM_810291R2.pdf.

Also would a K-301 flywheel work appropriately on the K-241. or are they hp matched.

Thanks for any help on this question!

A K241 and K301 flywheel will interchange.

You will take the magneto out, mount a charging stator inside.

You will need a 12v coil + ign lead, a condensor, and a bracket.

I beleive the bearing plate behind the flywheel will accept a charging stator without swapping the plate itself.

Source a cheap rectifier or build one.

I haven't done a big block Kohler, but I have swapped a K181.

Ignition timing is the same between the mag and the coil ignition, the spark is timed by the points irrespective of whether they are triggering a magneto or an ignition coil.  The condenser might be different between the two systems.

I think you have all the parts listed.  I had to swap the bearing plate on the motor I did as one had the mounts for the mag and the other had the mounting points for the stator.

Thanks both you guys, will be a fun project and allow me to convert to electric start and discard the rope. :bow-blue:

Actually I went the other way - converted to rope and ditched (yet another) battery I had to buy!!

Actually a while back I was looking for a recoil/mag set up for a big Kohler, for the life of me I don't remember why.  But once your project is up and running, if you want to sell the pieces you took off then let me know.

Will certainly do. The condenser I already figured interchanges, but may get the one closer to coil instead of by points. The mag stator at one time had a exciter coil having a lead routed to welder armature, it's gone. No telling how long may be have three other projects slowly evolving.
