Welcome aboard. Smoke is only a problem if you want it to be. Sounds like she is getting worn. Next question is how much work can you do yourself, and how much oil does it use. If its not smoking to bad oil is cheap. If you decide to fix it and can do the work yourself its not to expensive, a couple 2 or 3 bucks if you need machine work. If it measures out ad you just need to freshen it up a 100 bucks would do it.

If you have to pay to work the whole thing you will have 6-700 bucks into it.

And of course, what is the asking price of the tractor and what attachments?

If you can talk him down to that price with the blade it wouldn't be to bad a deal, if you even need the blade.

You wont know what it really needs until you open it up and do some measuring

Listen real close to the engine when not loaded and also while loaded and try to determine if the engine has a knock to it.  If so you may as well do the whole thing.  If it does **not** knock, a cheap set of rings and a quick hone will put you back in business.  It may also be a worn valve guide.  There is no seals, so if they get loose, the engine can still run nice, but oil will seep thru them.

The problem with leaving it burn oil, is you will need to stop and check the oil in the middle of the mow / or plowing.  It gets old after a while having to constantly monitor it.
