JC 1965 1,532 #1 Posted October 23, 2013 Having trouble with my starter on my 1991 312-8 model # 31-12K802. When I turn the key on the starter head spins but wont engage the flywheel. I noticed this starter is different than the old starters on the K series. Does it need cleaning or rebuild if that is possible ? I have never removed one of these starters so any help would be appreciated.
rmaynard 16,211 #2 Posted October 23, 2013 Sound to me like the Bendix on the starter is not moving. That tractor should have an M12 engine. It has a starter with a Bendix assembly on the end. The Bendix is basically a gear that is thrown forward by centrifugal force when the starter spins, and a spring that pushes it back when the starter motor stops. The gear engages the flywheel gear and turns the engine over. Sometimes the gear and the spiral shaft that it rides on will get gummed up with oil, dirt, and grass, causing it to not move. You need to clean it well. You can use something like brake cleaner to remove the muck and grime, and then DO NOT lubricate it. That will only cause it to bind up again. leeave96 490 #4 Posted October 24, 2013 Also sometimes the ground has become corroded of loose and can cause those symptoms too.
ARK 9 #5 Posted November 6, 2013 Follow the advice given, also charge the battery independently and verify the battery good, often low primary voltage cause too slow RPM. LET US KNOW THE RESULTS. There could be DC series motor problems, as said the bendix may be sticking, clean and use proper grease, check for wear.
