looked a little more this morning and I'm going to work on other parts and let the paint dry before making any decisions. working on the pto and seat pan/brackets and other misc. stuff today.....

i did paint the semi gloss on half a color chip i have of my powder black so i will let that dry out a little and compare. right now i think the semi gloss is too dull a match for the powder.

by the way the powder black is Azko Nobel Jet Black 20-7028HY if anyone is interested. We painted engine brackets for the Harley Vrods for quite a few years. its a HD approved powder so it probably matches other black the bikes have. it looked a good match for the Onan tins. its also my favorite black to use at work, flows out nice and is more scratch resistant than the other medium gloss blacks we have.

i thought i would settle the black paint on the hood decision this morning. i compared the semi gloss black sample with the gloss that is on the hood and the powder black of the blower housing. I'm staying with the hood the way it is. don't want the hood to flatter than the engine tins!

i really hate rattle can paint though, I'm just too impatient to deal with the drying times. i want to work on parts the same day i paint them if i have the time, watching paint dry might be fun for Stevasaurus, but not me.......

I'm happy with the way the hood turned out. still has more orange peel than a nice automotive style paint, but its one of the trade offs with powder and the environment i work in. we are a job shop and do mostly industrial and ag work, its not your typical high quality finish that i see on some of the red square members tractors that the paint looks like glass......

post-4321-0-00934300-1398613353_thumb.jp

also bolted together the seat bracket/hinges etc. used new bushings (105503) and all the replated hardware.... still sitting on the seat pan as i still have some work to do under the pan and its easier if i can remove it. have to decide on what sort of seat i want on there as well,  i just noticed the gas spring is leaking so that will need to be replaced. would have been nice to see it leaking before i cleaned it up.......

cleaned up originals.......

the volt meter face is faded and didn't come up as nice as the hour meter, may get replaced with new, still on the fence though. i had to paint the bezel on the hour meter as the black was worn through in places. i didn't do the volt meter yet..... ignition and light switch were good so they just got a clean too, the tractor had the toro key and still was in good shape, just needed some good cleaning.....

post-4321-0-07731900-1399141755_thumb.jp

the throttle cable lever was painted black and the oem plating cleaned up well with just a polish.....

been working on some more small stuff and will gather a few pics together and report later, but for now i want to report about a find......

was needing to replace the hood latches on this one as well as a couple of other of the later ones and needed to find latches at a more reasonably price than the average $15 or more each that toro wants for them. so i looked at one closely and found they were made by Addco in MN. a google search brings up Actus (they supply them now) and was pleasantly surprised they sell the exact same latches on the 80s up tractors. you can get them in stainless or clear zinc or black zinc as the 90s tractors had. the part number for the black is A-089-0118. they cost $6.97 each, but the kicker is the shipping at $15.59. since i needed them for a few tractors i bought 10 at a cost of $6.29 and the  added shipping of $15.59 spread out over the 10 pcs added $1.55 to each giving a total of $7.84 each, less than half the toro cost.......

heres the link for anyone interested......

http://www.actusinc.com/latches/a-089-0118.html

heres how they look. after you rub off the chalky surface on the rubber, nice new flexible rubber underneath and at a much better deal than the alternative for exactly the same thing. the ones i bought from toro for the c125 last year have the same markings and moulding as these.......

I'm going to try and update this with all the little things that have been done since last time. i decided to go back to the standard size engine drive pulley(was going to do the hydro one like on the c125) but decided to just keep this one standard 'speed'. so i cleaned up the 8 speed engine pulley and got that installed. waiting on one pto part and then the pto can go back on. also need to buy a drive belt. 93-9809 and get that on.

post-4321-0-28879200-1399824473_thumb.jp

while i was working on the drive area, i got an idler pulley sorted. the one that was on it was loose and worn in the bearing so i split it and purchased new balls, cleaned up the races, painted the halves and bolted it back together. it went well, but the races had small notches that were really hard to get out. the pulley spins a little noisier than i would like so i ended up just buying a new one from napa. the hd one with the 6203 sealed bearing in it. much quieter and smoother.....

blasted the old one. drilled out the spot welds and separated the halves. then rebuilt the bearing using new balls purchased from mcmaster car and put it back together. these are the only shots i have of the old rebuild....

post-4321-0-05086200-1399825399_thumb.jp

then, not satisfied with the rebuild i purchased a new napa idler part number 7-05485 and removed all the sloppy gray paint and repainted it black, masking off the bearing etc....

Absolutely beautiful Martin. That machine did not look that good when it left the factory floor. Shrink wrap it and put it in storage for a future generation to appreciate. That machine could win prizes in every place it is shown.

They all look nice when everything is gone through. But they were meant for a purpose and while I won't ever work it the way it's past life was, it will get used. If you can redo it once it can be done again. Now if I found a nice original one, there's no way I would do the same. They are only that way once and once that character is lost, it's gone forever. There's nothing that's going to make it original again.

Found a quote of yours from a while back. :omg:

"That doesn't mean that it doesn't get dirty though. I don't consider any of my tractors " trailer queens". They were brought and fixed up to enjoy".

Time for a retraction??    :ychain:

not much of an update, but it took a lot of work to get this decal right. Thanks Terry for all your hours of work!!!!!

I wanted more of a satin black look with my decals and Terry let me try using unlaminated decals on my dash. all the decals on the upper and lower will be done this way. i didn't want the gloss that the laminated decals gives, wanted more of a match with my black powder. we also got the font correct and all the positioning right by scanning my original and then Terry went to work to make it what you see below.

Im real excited about getting the others done now. we need to do a couple corrections on the final upper dash decal and then this one in the pic will be replaced with that.

let me just say that applying unlaminated decals isn't for the faint of heart, i like to think i have a reasonable skill level applying them normally, but these ones because the material is so thin, kicked my a## big time. I didn't get this one perfect but i learned a little about what i need to do next time. i had some tiny spots of air on the throttle side still, they are impossible to move anymore, i gave up after 30 minutes of working on that side. the left side i couldn't be more happy with. the dash metal was far from perfect and that only made things more difficult.....

Great job Martin. I am going right back out to the shop and finish ripping the final changes to the dash and console decals and print them tonight so they will cure for cutting tomorrow.

Thanks Terry!

I also wanted to add if anyone is contemplating using decals like this on their 3,4,500 series, keep in mind that because they are not protected by a layer of laminate, the decals probably won't be as durable as the regular ones Terry does. I am fine with that and the one in the pic above already has a coat of sealer wax on it. I would think that one decent scratch will go through to the silver layer below as well, once again because there is one protective layer missing.

Once again, this is the way i wanted them, i also like the fact that they are thin like the oem decals as well.....

they are also very difficult to apply, the transfer paper is a must, you would not be able to get the bubbles worked out of them without scratching them up. the wax will be applied a few times more to help protect them....
