i967mustang 21 #1 Posted October 14, 2013 I have a pair of Wheel Horse C160s, one is a 1976 8 speed and the second that I just picked up is a 1974 C160 auto with hydraulic lift. I decided since the 76 8 speed was completely redone and only has 5 hours on the engine I would convert it over to hydro with the hydraulic lift, how hard can that be right? What a surprise I got, I have been working on it for two days now and I think I finally have it done except for and idler pulley which was bad and a new drive belt. I would never have figured so many parts were different between the two tractors, when this is done I still have to put the 8 speed back in the second tractor because my brother wants that one. daveoman1966 3,841 #2 Posted October 14, 2013 (edited) You are right....there are many diff's between the Auto and an 8-sp. It'd be kinda like swapping out the manual trans for automatic on your old Ford 150...or vice versa. Lemme know if you need parts as I have lots for the C-160 style Wheelhorse tractors. Kelly 1,033 #3 Posted October 14, 2013 Not only did you go from a stick to a hydro they made a body change in that time, they went from the flip up seat to the fixed seat, and that changed a bunch of stuff, at least it was all a bolt on, lots of them
546cowboy 302 #4 Posted October 14, 2013 One good thing about it is you'll really like that hydro and the lift, I probably wouldn't have done that myself unless the manual was junk. I would have most likely refurbished the C-160 Auto and swapped engines. Much easier to do. But whatever floats your boat as they say.
i967mustang 21 #5 Posted October 15, 2013 546cowboy, its not just the engine that stopped me from rebuilding the auto. When I redid the 160 8 speed I stripped it to a bare frame and started there, Stripped all the paint and primed and repainted like you would with a car. This tractor has base coat clear coat on it from bottom to top and I didn't want to lose a perfect tractor just to get the hydro and lift.
