Hi Bill,

The fuse in my C-161 for the lights, is a 20 amp and the ignition is a 25 amp. You probably have a bared wire someplace, or a bad fuse holder, to create a short in the lighting circuit. Might even be the switch.

Thanks for that. The fuse that was originally in the holder was blown and rusted inside (20 years outside unused) so I had no idea what should be in there. I will fit 20 amp (have tried upto 35) and have a good look at the wires and switch. thanks again bill.

Don't go to a 35 amp or you will let the smoke out of the wires. Go no more than 20. If that blows you need to find the short.

Make sure the contacts that meet the fuse ends are not corroded. That causes high resistance = heat and will get red hot and melt the fuse. Hard to tell the difference between a melted fuse and one that was overloaded by a short.

Good situation to use dielectric silicone grease to keep corrosion at bay.

I have noticed the fuse only blows when the engine is running. If i turn ignition on and lights on without starting the engine then lights are OK and stay on fine, then as soon as I start engine the fuse blows? any suggestions.........many thanks regards Bill

Found the problem today and now fixed it. After the repaint of the tractor I had not re secured headlight wires in the clips around the bonnet, so the right hand side wire was just touching the exhaust and causing the short. This was only obvious with the bonnet down though which was why every time i looked with the bonnet up I could not see a problem. Thanks for advice though as it made me keep looking! regards Bill
