ok went out to start the c141 acted like battery dead so took it out charged it. put back in still same thing so decided to jump it same thing. the only way it will start is if you turn key to on and jump the solenoid. there are wires by the rear tire that are still connected. this happened before one of those wires came off. any ideas ???

Are you jumping the solonoid as in bypassing it or are you just energizing it with a jumper?

I have 312-8 that I start with a screwdriver (heavy duty, well insulated) across the solenoid terminals after turning the key on.  The ignition switch must have shorted somewhere, since part of it melted and smoked.  I think I need to rewire the whole thing, since it's a mess, and nothing (lights, hour meter, etc) works.  A winter project, in addition to the tranny, which is getting hard to get into gear.

You have a bad connection between the battery and solenoid. It could be the key switch or seat switch or clutch switch or pto switch or fuse. You just have to clean everything as you go as you divide and conquor. If I were you I would replace the key switch as maintenance. These things do go bad.

Wiring diagram

1/2 the pto switch along with the seat switch controls the ignition.

The other 1/2 of the pto switch plus the clutch switch (gear transmission) or neutral switch (automatic) controls the starter circuit.

This is a C-141 correct? Go to

https://lookup3.toro.com/partdex/index.cfm?xCaller=Toro

and enter C-141 and Search. They will all come up and each has "Assembly Drawings" on the right. Open that and then the 4th page named "Electrical System-Single Cylinder Models".

I believe switch #16 104680 is the pto switch and not identified correctly in the parts list.

I believe switch #10 is the clutch pedal switch.

I believe this online ipl includes the switches for both gear models and automatic making it confusing.

Here is the original 1979 parts list from the RS files

http://www.wheelhorseforum.com/files/file/1928-tractor-1979-c-series-ipl-part2-late-production-810118r1pdf/

http://www.wheelhorseforum.com/files/file/1929-tractor-1979-c-series-ipl-part3-late-production-810118r1pdf/

These are much better.

The pto switch should be at the right end of the battery. I could be wrong because have never seen this model.

Both the seat switch and the clutch switch can be temporarily jumped to test the system. Just connect the 2 wires but make sure the transmission is in neutral and the tractor is not in a position to do damage or injure if it happens to take off. Clean and lube the switches and adjust as necessary to make them work and remove the jumpers. It is a simple system that seldom fails and keeps us safe.

There is a service manual WH published at the C-141 time that covers many more models and years. Do a search of the RS manuals for this number and it will come up is 4 parts.
