Gas Supply issue still in effect: wheel horse 1054

Recommended Posts

Here's the deal:

1.  Engine only runs on choke.

2.  Clean fuel lines, clean filter.

3.   Rebuilt carb.

4.  Starts, runs for a bit, then when choke is opened, dies.

5.  Fuel filter is new, but only fills about 1/4 of the way; normal?

What'ya think it is?  I'm guessing a fuel pump issue.  I took the fuel pump apart, put it back together, and thought I had it, but still no go.

Anyone use the after market fuel pumps for k241s?  They look flimsy, plastic things.  Need a little advice.  Winter's coming, and I'd like to at least get the 1054 up and running so I can use my plow.

Thanks.

so what did you change from when you were having problems in the last thread on this issue? there was some still some issues if i recall.

last thing mentioned in this thread  that gas was spitting out the carb.

gas coming out of the carb tells me its still a carb problem and that the pump is getting the gas there. check float/needle/seat etc and the bowl vent on the carb.

the fuel filter filling up 1/4 of the way isnt of concern as long as the gas is getting through it. most of my filters, depending on orientation dont totally fill with gas.

was the pump rebuilt? what condition is the pump like inside? the diaphram and check valves ok?

have you adjusted the high speed mixture screw richer to see if it will run better without choke?

let us know what you find, im sure on the forum we can get it worked out for you......

I took the pump apart and check all the mechanisms out, everything seemed ok.  Good to know about the filter, I wasn't sure about that.  I'll fiddle around with the carb a bit, try the high speed needle.  I set it to the recommended settings: 2 1/2 turns out on the high and 2 turns out on the low and then tried to take it from there, but still seem to have some trouble.  I actually just came back in from fiddling with it and it was starting to run a wee bit better after some adjusting.  I backed the choke off very slowly while idling and at the same time adjusted the needle for the low.  Maybe I'll do the same with the high.  Maybe that'll do the job.

I really appreciate all the help, as I'm new to tractors and mechanical issues with engines in general.

Thanks again.

dont worry about the low right now, start the high out at 3 turns out and run it a lot faster, tune the high speed first and then deal with the low speed once you are sure its running good. you dont need to max out the revs just yet, just at a reasonable 3/4 throttle and then see if you can get it running better.......

once its running good, tune it again at full throttle, go one way with the screw until it runs rough, make note of slot position, then back the other way, make note of position again, now move it back half way between the two extremes. now very small adjustment, wait and see how it reacts, then adjust again. dont go to quick at it. listen for any changes before moving it again......

did the gas coming out the carb stop happening?

high speed screw is the one that should run vertical if your carb is oem for your tractor. (longer needle). the needle is free and clear of any crap inside it right? all holes etc clear?

WH nut

Gas spitting out the Carb also indicates a plugged muffler

No gas spitting out of the carb.  I've been messing with the low, not the high.  I hadn't thought of that.  I'll give it a go by adjusting the high at 3/4 throttle, like you said.  Maybe I've been going at it too fast, turning the screws too much.  I'll make really small adjustments and wait, to see if that helps.

Thanks again.

Another note...  once you get it to where it will at least run, leave it warm up to operating temperature before fine tuning it.  As it warms you may need to play with the adjustment some...

Finally got it running at 3/4 throttle with high adjustment at around 3 1/2 turns.  Will play with the low tomorrow.  Thanks for the advice.  I will also let it warm up for a awhile before fiddling with the low.
